These guys were pretty good at creating an advertisement that breaks most viewers running mental pattern. Behavioral Psychs call it a pattern interrupt. Another example was those "Monster er er er er Truck!!! uck! uck!! Madnessssssssssssssssssssssssss!" radio advertisements (do they still play those?) with all the echo. Most people are cruising along in their car waiting for the next song to come on, and then all of a sudden there that nutty commercial.
Ever wonder why that guy wears the headset? It's not the 1950's -- we've got something called a boom microphone now. ;-)
