Let's say one morning you were telling your boyfriend about a complex dream you had about Star Trek: The Next Generation, and he mentioned that he hadn't really seen any episodes of the show. Which 2 or 3 episodes do you get immediately from Netflix to rectify this situation ( Read more... )

Best of Both Worlds, pts 1 and 2; I can't believe I'm the first to mention this. Also Yesterday's Enterprise, the one where Tasha Yar sort of comes back. And Reunification, parts 1 and 2. And it was cheesy, but I liked Time's Arrow, when Data went back in time to San Francisco.

Oooh yes, Time's Arrow, with bonus Guinan! Good calls, all.

Would also suggest First Contact movie as a follow-up to Best of Both Worlds. It's the only TNG movie I actually liked.

and one of the eps right after Best of Both Worlds pt. 2...called Family, I think? When Picard goes back to earth and has a breakdown in the vineyard with his curmudgeonly brother?

Pick two or three? Oh man. Um. I mean, Darmok and The Inner Light are both fantastic Picard episodes, but don't give you much about the other characters. Measure of a Man, maybe? I remember that one being at least a little more ensemble-based. Though I guess it depends on how A gets absorbed by media; does he appreciate character studies or ensemble interactions more?

Q hijinks are always good. Maybe one of those after something like the Best of Both Worlds arc? Or THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!

Hmm, well, the only shows he watches nowadays are 30 Rock and The Daily Show, so it's hard to say! Good call on the need for ensemble vs PStew doing his RSC thing. Haha, on second thought, now I just want to watch his episode of Extras.

Measure of a Man, maybe?

Except if you choose a Pulaski episode as one of the few, we are through professionally.

But will it make you show up at my door in a rage with a suitcase full of TNG videos? Because that might be worth it.

Okay as soon as I was halfway through the first paragraph my response was THE ONE WHERE THEY'RE KIDS and then once I got to the second I was all "omg I LOVE the one where Geordi and Ro are invisible" (favorite lame only-on-Star-Trek trope ever, I'm still mad about the time they did it on Enterprise and they reset-buttoned the entire thing just as it was getting good), so, uh, suffice to say: I am team cracky and fun. But I guess it matters more how the boyfriend is: does he like his tv ridiculous and silly, or does he like it serious and deep? Because TNG does have its' moments of both. Also I can't remember: is there a good, ensemble-driven two parter? Like maybe Best of Both Worlds or something... like Best of Both Worlds but less serious? That way he can figure out which characters he likes best and you can figure out a plan of attack from there.

Yessssss, what excellent taste you have in crack, sir! Oh man I had no idea Enterprise did that, I only watched the first few episodes of that one.

See, problem is he likes stuff like 30 Rock, so I want to go funny.... But obviously the two won't compare, and maybe to enjoy the cracky eps you have to have sat through a ton of dull Klingon politics. Then again, he was totally into Voyager in high school so maybe he's totally prepped.

Voyager did it too! My DS9 experience is kind of hole-y, so I've always wondered if they had a secret one too. That way they could all match.

Oh god no he's not, serious Voyager episodes are about alien Nazi holodeck adventures. You should definitely go with the cracky stuff for the first three in that case, you can sneak in the more serious stuff when you've ensnared him with ridiculousness.

I have no idea, because I've never seen TNG episodes either! So I'll be interested in what you decide to show him. My experience of Star Trek is the new movie, and a couple of TOS episode that I found extremely boring despite all my good intentions. Is TNG better?

Hee: it is way better than TOS but way dated compared to present day stuff. Some of it can be good cracky fun tho, if you're ever in the mood for some early-'90s hairstyling!

Ugh, you've reminded me how antsy I am for the next reboot movie tho! HURRY UP JJ.

Definitely not the finale of season 2, whatever that episode was called. WEAK.

David is the ST fan of the two of us, I'm just along for the ride. We were just talking about Tapestry (which I haven't seen), which he says is probably one of the top two eps of the show? So that one. I also like the one with Picard and Dr. Crusher stuck in the holodeck recreation of a noir mystery.

Most of seasons 1-2 were kind of a waste of space, imo. But, you know, you watch for the camp, as is always the case with any Star Trek incarnation of any era.

David also prefers the show after season 3, but 1&2 are the only one I've seen in entirety - they're the only ones we own. The DVDs are expensive!

I was so pissed about the Season 2 finale, though - a clip show, really? Stupid writers' strikes.
