Fresh & strong the world we seize.

Most of this summer I'm going to be in Paris, frantically working on the French proficiency I claimed in my grad school apps, but because of visa ridiculousness, I'll need to spend a certain amount of time outside the EU. (Or not really the EU, the Schengen Area; mostly, but not-quite the same.) We're firming up travel plans so I'd love to know ( Read more... )

I've not been myself, but have heard first hand from several reliable, shoestring budget travelers that Croatia is absolutely beautiful.

That's all I have to offer, really!

The pics are great :)

Ha, I have heard that, too! Either it's really awesome or they have great marketing.

That's a good idea about the blog and something I'm toying with. Outside exposure, yay! But also outside exposure, eep.

I actually lived in England while I was in grad school, so it's less exciting, but I'm going to Wales at least once to visit a friend and also might hit up the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh in August, since I've actually (gasp) never been to Scotland -- so thanks for the upvote!

My sister served in the Peace Corps in Bulgaria and has traveled around the area. Would you like me to ask her anything? Or I could just give you her email.

I think you can in Europe. ke_rose_ne April 21 2011, 22:08:06 UTC
Europe! You make my heart hurt. Ditto the friends-recommend-Croatia.

On your list, I only hit up Romania and I -- I'm not sure I recommend. I spent a day in Bucharest and it was definitely interesting as hell: there was a museum I really liked, and delicious coffee/pastry, and you could still smoke in the cafes! (Which probably isn't a plus, but made me feel very old-world-y, like Brodsky or Szymborska or someone else oppressed like that.) But on the con side, it was a straight-up unhappy city: decrepit buildings, really poor neighborhoods everywhere, very uncomfortable to be tourist-ing in. It was the only place in my travels that someone tried to pickpocket me, and on the overnight train out of there I shared a compartment with a drugged-out dude who babbled in Romanian and creeped me out majorly.

Go to Russia! St. Petersburg! You'll be there for the crazy nighttime sun, right? Alsotakemewithyou.

I want you to talk ALL about your travels! I want to go to Russia soon (mebbe next year... ) and I want tips! You probably know this already but visa requirements for all those places will probably take some organisation. I'd get onto it as soon as you can.

(Also, why not Switzerland?)

Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area, even though it's not part of the EU, so it counts toward the same 90-day in-zone limit I have to avoid, alas.

Ahh, thanks, I hadn't even looked into Russian visa stuff yet, and it was a long shot anyway, so that may not work! But oh man, I hope you go and post all about it.
