Monica and I are officially Hyzons now. We had our 5 minutes in court (preceded by 2 hours of waiting in court), and the judge signed the order, so now we can spend the rest of our lives correcting the various bureaucracies that will inevitably screw it up ( Read more... )

Well, if I wasn't a lazy bum, I could have had everything taken care of in about three months. But what with having a baby, and dragging my feet, and working the various fees into monthly budgets, it took longer. Really, I only began in earnest about a year ago. So though we've been decided on a new last name for nigh-on three years now, it only took me about 9 extra months.

Since you're creating your own last name and all, I think you should go ahead and model its plural on Greek-based nouns like "criterion" and "automaton." In other words, I think you're officially Hyza now. :-)

So was your daughter's name already correct, or did you have to change hers too?

Her's was fine, when they asked her name for all the forms in the hospital, they didn't bat an eye that her name was different that either mine or Monica's. Odd.

Though for tracking in the hospital, Ariana was know as "Ellison, Monica baby girl." She had Ariana on a big green shamrock in her crib (since she was born in early March), though, but that was mostly for the nurses and visitors.
