Advice to artists from H.R. Giger's website

Nov 15, 2010 14:52

Here is a letter that is written, I believe, by Giger's assistant. I really love the grumpy, impatient tone that it has. I like that it is old fashioned and advocates doing real work to create art. I come back and read this occasionally because I think it is good advice.

Dear Aspiring Artist: )

"Never explain your art. People who ask you to do so are idiots."

I love this, but the above phrase especially.

'Stop aspiring and start doing'

Is my most relevant line at the moment.

I'm tempted to print it out too. It makes a lot of sense. Love the stress on absorbing what's around you: arts, history, news, experience. You can't develop in a vacuum.

Thanks for this :)

Hmmm, not so much on the 8AM... And, regrettably, having pet snakes, as well as most of my wardrobe, does obligate me to Explain Myself sometimes. Fortunately, I looooove talking about my snakes.

On the other hand, I will happily admit I cannot draw, in large measure because I am hopeless at drawing people. Good thing I only sketch.

Interesting advice, some of which is very good. I too like the curmudgeonly tone. But that 8 AM thing... That I fear I cannot get behind. You wake up that early and you're wasting the best hours of the day!

Yeah, the 8am crap....not so good! Let's just ignore that shall we?
