St.Nicholas day

Today is St. Nicholas day, December 6th. I know that doesn't matter to anyone unless they are religious, but the reason I mention it is because there is an association that I have for this date.
When I was a little girl, at the time when my parents were still married, we used to go to church every now and then (because my dad is religious) and then ( Read more... )

some religious traditions are so strange in retrospect...but that is an awesome and very interesting story...

Yes, they are strange when I think about them now. When you are a kid, you only know that something is scary and don't question it. It was an interesting event though, it makes a nice memory :)

ah but that's why children are the perfect audience...they only feel the fear and don't understand symbolism...and hopefully they are hooked before they figure it out...

hey sugar lady (a play on "meaty lady"), I guess that you milk teeth were not as sweet but once you got the permanent ones you probably developed a sweet tooth. I remember you telling me about Krampus. But the Krampus thing with the huge Krampus made out of straw (like a scarecrow) that was set on fire in Sibenik is the only memory of him for me. I love your memories from childhood with Krampus and stories when you had fun with your childhood friends. No wonder you turned out so great!!!

That's the funniest thing! I was not interested in sweets of any kind whatsoever when I was little. Now I'm the sugar addict!
Was that burning Krampus anything like the one in the picture or was it just a humanoid shaped hay stack?

Wow, I didn't realize that there was a saint's day for December 6.

It's also the 70th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion, (largest man-made explosion pre-nuclear weapons, leveled half the city) and the Marc Lepine Ecole Polytechnique massacre.

Rough day for a saint... Oh, and Pearl Harbor day was Dec 7...

have you ever gone through the catholic calendar? Every day has its own saint. The best thing is that a 60% of the houses in the country I come from used to have those and there is a saing day for every single day.

It's true, it's true.

IIRC, there's currently a movement to canonize the late Pope John Paul II.

Wow, that's freaky! Was this a cruel joke by the church to terrify the kids masked as a "tradition" ? And I thought it was creepy enough growing up Catholic, going to church and always having that poor chap nailed to to cross looking at me with those helpless eyes. That cross is such a violent image for young kids to witness.
