Death to Hipsters!

Aug 24, 2008 17:47

Last night I was enlightened by some information from Nelson. He told me about an anti "Hipster" article that Adbusters published last month, which I read this morning. It absolutely nailed everything I ever thought and mumbled grumpily about this awful trend that just doesn't want to pass.
Here's the article link, enjoy!

You should read William Gibson's "All Tomorrow's Parties"... There's this part where it's almost as if certain 'powers that be' have taken measures to ensure the survival of 'Interstitial zones', like the Golden Gate Bridge being turned into a shantytown in order to allow genuine 'counterculture' zones to flourish, so that they can kind of have a life of their own and have a chance to actually come up with something new before the marketers get at them.

You'd probably enjoy his "Pattern Recognition" too...

That one sounds interesting. I'll have to get on reading some of that stuff.

Also, reminds me of the onion once again hitting the nail on the head: two hipsters angrily call each other 'hipster'

It is a great article and thank you so much for posting it. I enjoyed every moment of it and Nelson's rumbling that night. The funniest thing is that the first comment after the article mentions that these kids are not politically active and that is what is making the demise of the culture (counterculture). I can't grasp why someone needs to be politically active in order to be recognized. It totally blows my head off. Secondlly, the other day at work an 18 year old was stating how some crappy musician (sounding a lot like Radiohead) is the best thing that could've happened to the world. To which I replied "NO IT IS THE RAMONES". And to this day he rumbles about Beatles being the best and Led Zeppelin rocking it all the way. I mean are you kid seriously 18 or you are 18 years older than me ( ... )

The irony of Adbusters admonishing hipsterism is delicious.

This is like some sort of event horizon of irony at which point we can no longer escape from it.

Also, 4th-ed, or whatever the proper term is.

strange i feel the same way...though i can at least understand hippies and for all their faults they did stand for some things...though they were a very poor rip off of the beatniks...hipsters and ravers just seemed like vacuous counter culture to me...

Yes, it's true that hippies stood for some things whereas hipsters stand for nothing except for embarassment to humanity... Ravers weren't my favorite either, I often thougth of them as hippies of the 90s.

i have to agree on the raver scene...i always thought of them as hippie light, they were the prelude to the new scenesters...they were mostly in it for the drugs and partying...hipsters to me stand for mass consumerism...they are a product of the advertising age...whereas other counter cultures are definitely co-opted, copied and coveted by advertisers after a certain period the hipsters were a part of the process from the beginning...counter culture generally runs the opposite to the prevailing norms hence the "counter" part of it...i just don't see that from hipsters...though it does get tougher and tougher these days to escape the clutches of the advertisers and marketers as they are everywhere...
