A less Iron Man-y version of this research is real; DARPA (and probably others) are funding exoskeleton research for warfighters in the field and for wounded veterans at home. That should indicate something of the level of difficulty involved... also, it means that if you do want to try this, there are papers you can get and read to see what other people have tried and how well it has or hasn't worked.
5. Make a suit of european fullplate armor - either out of sheet metal, plastic paint buckets, or cardboard
6. Make a suit of japanese samurai armor - either properly, or cosplay grade
You probably knew this already, but I'm sure I could scare up contacts with SCA armorers if you want a guided tour of someone's workshop and what he considers essential equipment.
