The Boy
As a boy, Jin's behavior is only seen when Ragna reflects on his past throughout the game. It's safe to say that living with his siblings (Saya and Ragna) in a church with Sister was a happy time. Ragna mentions Jin was a bit clingy and a cry baby, always pining for Ragna's attention. He's jealous of his younger sister, but there's no canon to know what the relationship between Saya and Jin is as children, at least not in detail (although it is mentioned in passing he would tease her a lot). It's certainly a shock to Ragna when Jin burns the church down with Saya and Sister still in it, so it's probably safe to say he was a decent little kid until the disaster at the church happened with Terumi.
After the church incident, Jin ends up being taken in by the esteemed Kisaragi family due to his talents. From Tsubaki's memories, Jin was quiet and not too social when she first met him. He warms up to her, however, enough to let her say he's her older brother (she's really young at the time, so it's childish indulgence. However, even once she's grown up she still refers to him in the japanese as "Jin-niisama").
In Calamity Trigger, Jin reflects on his life from the time that he enters the Kisaragi household all the way until he is compelled to travel to Kagutsuchi to meet the "Grim Reaper" that everyone has been talking about. Up until then, Jin said he felt empty and void of emotion. The other siblings of the Kisaragi family were not welcoming to him, especially when his talents and exceptional obedience earned him the place as the next head of the Kisaragi household. As a Cadet in the military academy, he is shown as friendly towards his peers, although not overly personal (He only calls Tsubaki by her first name, which he doesn't to other peers-- he's distant from most of them). Although "devoid of emotion", it's more like Jin just simply doesn't care. He's not sure why, but nothing could spark his interest of enthusiasm. Even his victory in the Ikaruga Civil War that earned him the time "hero" and a promotion to major, nothing phased him, positive or negatively. All that changes, however, whenl the rumor of the "Grim Reaper" reaches Jin's ears.
(Note** Sister is never given a name in game canon, but in the official Phase -0- official light novel, her name is revealed to be Caelica, Nine's (one of the 6 heros who killed the black beast long ago) younger sister.
(Note 2**) Apparently in the drama cd, Wheel of Fortune, which tells the story of the timeline that Noel didn't exist, there is a vision Tsubaki sees of Jin and Saya when they were younger. Apparently, Saya and Jin were very affectionate towards one another, often playing together and Saya even openly states how much she loves Jin. It's currently unknown if this relationship was the same in the current timeline Blazblue follows, but it is before Saya gets ill and thus Ragna spending more time with her. Therefore, it's very possible that Jin only became jealous of Saya and Ragna's relationship once she became ill, but otherwise had a good loving relationship with his two siblings prior (Tsubaki even gets jealous at seeing this vision, yelling for Saya to get away from Jin-this probably extends from the fact that she met Jin at a very young age, possibly around Saya's in the vision she sees).
The Major
As Jin ages, most of his personality traits stay, but become increasingly negative. As stated above, when sent to the military academy, he was able to put on a good face: he's polite, but distant while he continuing to feel empty and wonder what the point of living actually was.
Even ending the Ikaruga Civil war, which earned him bother the title of "Hero of Ikaruga" and a promotion within the NOL, he still is cold and distant and uncaring. He says in narration of his storyline that he felt nothing despite his "accomplishments".
Jin is promoted to Major as a result of the war, becoming the youngest Division Commander of the NOL, but even this is treated with a lack of pride for himself or any other emotion. He simply does his job as told, now a Major or not, and that's that.
Then everything changes the day rumors from Kagutsuchi of the "Grim Reaper"'s presence reach the NOL branch that Jin is appointed to. For the first time, he starts to feel something, although he isn't sure what or why. All he knows is that suddenly his life doesn't feel so empty and he must find this "Ragna the Bloodedge" before anyone else. He defies a direct order (and in story mode of CT he reflects on it as if he doesn't even realize what he's done at first. Then he no longer gives a shit) to standby at his post to head towards Kagutsuchi.
Jin is often silent and speaking to himself until others approach him for whatever reasons. He's cold to them, even downright cruel at times, narrowminded, and unable to control himself to be obedient like he always has been any longer due to the search of his brother, who, as Jin suspected, the "Grim Reaper" everyone had talked about. (This is from CT all the way through CS)
He dismisses everything and everyone in order to find his brother, including his childhood friend, Tsubaki Yayoi, in Continuum Shift where she has orders for him to return to the NOL or face execution at her hand. He even crosses weapons with her in order to continue in finding Ragna.
Before Ragna came into the picture, he was a responsible soldier and commander to his men. It's unknown how they felt towards him, but Jin obviously doesn't care much about them other than using them for strategy and combat.
The Younger Brother
Jin was always jealous of Ragna's attention being primarily on their sister, Saya, because her body was weak from sickness (and that's the only reason why, not that he liked her more than Jin, which Jin seems to believe with getting shafted in terms of attention). He even goes as far to try and kill her by burning the church (albeit he's possessed at the time but it was recently mention in novel Phase Shift 1 that Terumi, the one who possessed Jin, can't possess anyone without their consent). During this time, Terumi/he also cuts Ragna's right arm off and leaves him to die in the church.
The first time he meets Noel Vermillion at the academy, he realizes she is identical to Saya (assuming Saya had grown to her age). Ever since that first meeting, seeing Noel's face haunts him, more or less, reminding him of the sister that dear brother Ragna always paid too much attention to. Jin, even as a child, loved Ragna and wanted his attention to himself.
When Ragna finally turns up again, Jin's feelings of love and desire for attention are still there, but he, perhaps under the influence of Yukianesa becomes, obsessed with killing him (and later, kill for a reason he thinks is noble). While it's never really been said why when Ragna shows up that he suddenly reacts like that, it's a special kind of crazy just for Ragna (He thought he killed him once and seeing him alive sends him into an obsession to track him down and kill him... again.) Still, his affection for Ragna is obvious, despite his over the top insanity that Yukianesa has no problem with cranking it up to 11.
In the burning of the church, it seems his logical was if he couldn't have Ragna's attention, then no one could. In his older years, the present, he's still possessive of Ragna. Only he is allowed to kill his brother and no one else.
Since Jin was taking in by the family Kisaragi after the church burned down, it was never revealed that he had a brother or sister. With Ragna presumed dead (he cut his arm off-or rather a Terumi-possessed Jin cut Ragna's right arm off) and Saya missing, Jin is the only one in need to be taken in. The Kisaragi family is a very wealthy and talented family, one of most prestigious that have been known to have a lineage of Nox Nyctores users and other ars magus. With Jin's talent to wield Yukianesa, his talents, and his willingness to be obedient, the head of the household accepts him into their family as a "son".
(In other words, him being the brother of the infamous Ragna the Bloodedge is a shock to almost everyone (the few that find out) when it's finally revealed.)
Nox Nyctores: Yukianesa
Yukianesa is one of the 10 calamity weapons made to fight the Black Beast, however in exchange for their powers, most individuals experience heightened emotions and then eventually go insane. With Yukianesa's influence, Jin gets his crazy meter turned up when he's already kind of crazy (over his brother) to begin with. He's aggressive, excited to kill, with no positive emotions that might induce such things as mercy. He is most crazy with Yukianesa around Ragna, intent on killing his brother "again" (from the church incident) and refusing to let him die at the hands of anyone else.
etc.
Just random information on his likes and dislikes and hobbies from the material collections book:
Hobbies: Collecting vintage motorcycles
Values: Nothing
Likes: Being left alone
Dislikes: Weaklings, meat dishes
Strengths:
physical: Jin is extremely talented in his actions and abilities, proving his worth of his elite position within the NOL (youngest commanding officer in the NOL) and his ability to wield Yukianesa, one of the Nox Nyctores. His handle on ars magus/ars armagus is impressive, as well, and he's physically fit, said to have been at physical activity back in the academy.
He is surprisingly quick and light on his feet and his sword handling skills are no exception. Most of the time, Jin has Yukianesa sheathed and only pulls the sword from the scabbard to perform certain attacks. His stamina is high, and he is able to endure high levels of pain from being injured (ex: After an encounter with Ragna in Calamity Trigger (1st game), Jin is severely wounded and taken to an NOL hospital. When he comes to, his wounds still are not healed and not allowed to leave, but Jin simply jumps out the window to continue his search in finding Ragna. He's shown to be quite good at dealing with great pain and still go after what he wants, although how successful in his goal is undetermined.)
He is also known as the Hero of Ikuraga due to his involvement in a war between the NOL and Ikuraga, is highly praised for his efforts all around. (Jin, however, doesn't seem to care much for the title and even scoffs at it when Tsubaki calls him that when she is trying to get him to return to the NOL after deserting.)
mental: This is a little difficult to describe, as Jin is mostly messed in the head with a little help from Yukianesa, but when not under Yukianesa's influence (aka super crazy) he's shown to be a good level-headed and logical leader, even if he is cold to most people. While he doesn't have much going for him in terms of the mental department due to Yukianesa, Jin refuses to give up and insists on seeing his way through to whatever his goal is. However, he is a bully to Noel because of certain circumstances described below, but other than that he doesn't seem to abuse his powers in the NOL nor does he abuse those he commands.
emotional: The concept of the calamity weapons is to drain their users of emotion so they can be effective killing machines. Yukianesa seems to do quite a good job in doing this for Jin, except when Ragna comes around (then Jin gets creepy and crazy with yukianesa helping that obsession rise). However, in Continuum Shift (2nd game), his mind is strong enough to start remembering things that Terumi erased from his mind and even Terumi is impressed by it. When Yukianesa starts to become overbearing (even to the point it will no longer listen -- he meets up with Ragna and they engage to fight but Jin can't draw Yukianesa), with a little help from Ragna he's able to finally overcome the will of the sword to fight Tsubaki (who appears right after Ragna leaves).
Jin is a very proud individual (as he should be, although calling other people worthless and trash and etc makes it more as if he's actually better than everyone), but surprisingly doesn't bask in his glory like many others. As a war hero he'd be just as content not being one, despite the perplexed individuals that hear this from him.
Although Jin's loss of levelheadedness when around his brother/anything happening to Ragna before he gets to him first (Jin wants to be the one to kill his brother), in Continuum Shift he makes it known why he's after his brother. He believes Ragna to be suffering in a "quiet hell" inside and Jin needs to kill him to help him. Despite the crazy/lack of logic (which can go in the weaknesses section), it shows there still is some type of emotional bond to Ragna beyond "kill kill kill".
yukianesa: Yukianesa, one of the 10 Calamity Weapons known of Nox Nyctores created to fight the Black Beast is as much a strength to him as it is a weakness. Not everyone can use Yukianesa and while Jin's mind has started to become a slave to the weapon, Jin has still lasted (in terms of not going crazy or losing all emotion) far longer than others with the blade (it seems he's had it since the night of the church fire when he was young).
Weaknesses:
**Note** While it's not obvious at first sight, Jin is a really flawed character, which is what makes him so interesting to many people (real people, not characters).
Ragna Ragna Ragna: The entire game is a canon example of his obsession with his brother as he spends all of his time possible trying to find Ragna the Bloodedge once he realizes that the other is in Kagutsuchi. He goes as far as to abandon his post, directly against NOL Orders to do this.
With Ragna (or when he's chasing Ragna around), Jin's logical self is thrown out the window. He's very possessive of his older brother and his mission to kill him, that he often overestimates himself and never takes the time to think of his decisions or his opponents on his journey. Jin is narrowminded, to the point he leaves Tsubaki (a childhood friend-- best friend, even) by herself after defeating her in battle because he has more important things to attend to (find his brother).
physicalConsidering physical abilities beyond using a sword, it's not known how strong or weak he is (his is consider a Tier A in video game competition terms, however...). He is talented in using ars magus/ars armagus, which allows him to use one of the calamity weapons. (He is in the NOL's military, but there's never been any hand to hand combat known. It's safe to say he's there are no physical weaknesses other than that of a regular human (at this point in canon there is nothing *special* about him physically), all his power coming from Yukianesa.
mental Jin is also a little bit crazy at times, particularly when Ragna is around. He carries a weapon known as the Nox Nyctores Yukianesa, a sword that is part of the calamity weapons made to fight the Black Beast several years prior to Blazblue canon. However, calamity weapons are hard to wield due to the taxing effect of insanity on their owners. The sword is, in a way, almost alive due to the spirits that needed to be collected to work the weapon (it's an ice elemental weapon). The sword can communicate with its user, to have the owner do its bidding, and Yukianesa has a good hold on getting Jin to do what it wants. Yukianesa urges him to kill and kill and kill some more. There is a point in his story mode where Yukianesa urges him to kill all the villagers in a town that he was brought to to recover from wounds he received from a fight with his brother, Ragna. ( Jin fights for his independence, however, and eventually is able to get his memory back and his personality-he's still pretty crazy possessive of his brother, but...)
emotional Jin has a strong disliking of his secretary, Noel Vermillion. He has no respect for her even as his secretary and when Noel is ordered to find and bring back Jin due to his desertion, he has no issues with beating the crap out of her when she finally finds him and tries to stand in his way.
As far as Noel goes, Jin's hatred comes simply from "her face". She has the exact same features as his and Ragna's sister, Saya. Jin was always jealous of Ragna's attention being primarily on her because her body was weak from sickness. Seeing Noel's face haunts him, more or less, reminded of the sister that dear brother Ragna always paid too much attention to. Jin, even as a child, loves Ragna and wants his attention to himself. It's a feeling that carries on throughout his years even without Ragna around (he'll talk to his brother when he's in the academy, like a person who lost someone talking to the sky and hoping they can hear them).
Needless to say, she pisses him off way too easily (just by looking at her).
And when she starts to mingle with his brother... well you can just guess how high the hatred meter goes.
When Ragna finally turns up again, Jin's feelings are still there, but he becomes completely obsessed with killing him. While it's never really been said why he suddenly reacts like that is probably influence from Yukianesa and mixed memories since most of Jin's memories were erased by Terumi. He thought he killed his brother once and seeing him alive sends him into an obsession to track him down and kill him "again". Still, his affection for Ragna is obvious, despite his over the top insanity that cranks itself up to 11 in the Grim Reaper's presence. With the church burning, if he couldn't have Ragna's attention, then no one could. In his older years, the present, he's still possessive of Ragna. Only he is allowed to kill his brother and no one else. Actually, he just doesn't want anyone even touching his brother, freaking out at Noel towards the end of the CS game for cradling his head in her lap.
Jin is also quite impulsive and dismissive of most individuals (he's very proud of himself, and dislikes being ordered around). Although he is important to the NOL (the Novis Orbis Librarium) and commander of the 4th squad, when Jin finds out about Ragna, he abandons the NOL without a second though. He does what he wants, when he wants, and has a temper and no patience for others, especially when they're in his way.
yukianesa: As far as powers or special abilities causing weakness, Jin's weapon Yukianesa is a weakness (as well as a strength listed above). Most Nox Nyctores users eventually as subject to insanity and only a few particular people are able to resist. Yukianesa is able to control Jin through a good portion of the story and he gets out of control concerning finding his brother and plowing his way through others to get there. (In the game Continuum Shift, he does eventually towards the end learn to overcome Yukianesa and have the weapon obey him, instead of being used by the weapon.)
Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)
First Person: (Going to try introspective piece)
Hm, there's a village here? ...A rather poor excuse for a village, anyway. Still, how unexpected, I had been beginning to think this place was simply made of trees and more trees. I need to gather more information about the area before I do anything rash. Since this is the only place that seems civilized--somewhat, anyway-- enough to bother asking. I find it hard to believe others would enjoy living here with these... these disgusting feathers and bone suddenly embedded into their backs.
They hurt, even underneath my overcoat, I can still feel them as if they're freshly healed, and I'm probably making it worse by draping cloth over them...
-ugh! Still hurts, but what the hell is this place, anyway! Even the NOL... Damn it, maybe I should see if there's a clinic, but somehow I doubt that would be of any use. Some seem to be in as much pain as me while others almost seem... used to them. Still, they're obtrusive and I refuse to display such pitiful things publicly.
Third Person: There was no way to describe it, no way to discuss it or persuade him otherwise, and there certainly was no stopping him. Time didn't matter, he already hated this goddamn place; this place with people like himself with wings that were once upon a time not there on their backs, this place where people disappeared from time to time to be experimented on (so he'd heard), this place called Luceti.
His own wings, hidden under the overcoat of his uniform still throbbed in pain, although much less so than when he first found himself waking up in a forest that he had never seen before. (He'd only let the shock in his mind linger for a few minutes before he refused to waste any more time. His uniform had been left folded neatly beside him and he had wasted no time grabbing it and proceeding to dress. In the back of his mind, he wondered what was aching so much. A bad fall? He had woken up on the floor of a forest, right? However when he went to put his overcoat on, his fingers brushed what felt like feathers. ...Wings? "What the hell--" he started, his throat emitting an offensive growl with his words. Without a second thought Jin finished putting the overcoat on, being sure it draped back to hide the obnoxious wings away. He'd have to deal with them later.)
Maybe he was just used to pain, dragging himself here and there back home, almost like he was doing now. Here he was, searching the small village he entered and for once in his recent life, he wasn't looking to see if his brother (or anyone else from Kagutsuchi) were also here. Instead, his quick pace carried him down a cobblestoned street, hands balled into fists in agitation the longer he walked, giving side glances to some buildings he went by.
All useless shops, in his opinion, and none that he cared to ever give a second glance to again. Everything was useless here: the shops, the natives, the people that were stuck here just like him-why the hell hadn't these people found a way out by now? (Did he really have to do everything himself?) Was it really so content to live in a paradise where you went to bed every night, hoping to some god not to wake up on an experimentation table? Jin himself had his own problems and sensibility to worry about, but he was certain anyone who wanted to stay in this place was madder than he ever was.
Yukianesa, where the hell did they take you?
The NOL Major halted suddenly, right in the middle of the street without care for anyone else, including those walking behind him or for those passing by with Jin suddenly being an obstruction in their path. It wasn't as if he cared. He never did, and never would, especially not in this place. The people were as worthless as the village.
(--Being taken away from Kagustsuchi, leaving his brother alone to face whatever was up on the roof alone, damn this place--.)
A shop caught his eye and he turned on heel to observe the outside momentarily. A bored and slightly grouchy sigh escaped his throat before he went and headed towards it. It was a weapon shop and it was as good a place to start looking for his missing weapon, he supposed. Maybe the shopkeeper could even tell him what was going on, too, or where to find Yukianesa if not in his shop. But at the same time it didn't matter whether the shop keeper was helpful or not. If Yukianesa wasn't there, he'd look elsewhere. If Yukianesa was not there, either, then elsewhere again. He'd tear the entire village apart if necessary to find what he lost-no, what had been stolen from him!
Each step he took, the tension around him tightened until he was almost stiff as a board upon entering the shop in silence.
Note for if accepted: Hi, I am a little unclear about weapons and magical items being taken away/found in shops/etc. My character wields a blade that has the element of ice attributed to it, but it's not technically magic. It's scientifically made by being able to manipulate seithr (which is probably better described as an energy than magic in canon). Would this be considered a magical item? I ask because the weapon is a really important part of his characterization and how he's played (since the weapon influences him/can talk to him in his head/etc.), but i wasn't sure if that would be enough to make it "essential" that he has it with him when he wakes up.
Could you just clear it up for me on where Yukianesa stands? And if it's a magical item, how long until he can get it back? (I would have posted on your Q&A but it seems replies to questions are slow, but i know you'll see this here. I looked at the in-depth extension of the FAQ and understand how it works, I just don't know exactly what category this falls into. I apologize for the inconvenience.
