I went into some detail in an email sent to the one in your LJ profile. It's a 1965 film so know what you're getting into in terms of laconic pacing, but yes, it has one of the best entrances for any character in any movie ever about an hour into the film.
Oh, don't worry about it. Any kind of response is better than no response, and it's not like the family pain isn't something I'm well acquainted with by now.
So my son's just discovering Hindi movie music, and I told him there were big dance routine videos to go with it, and now I've opened the floodgates. Here's my possibly insulting question: can you recommend any movies solely, or principally, for the set-piece, upbeat music sequences? I'm guessing Dhoom 2 and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom must both deliver here, but I bet they're not musical classics, and I'm more interested in finding the language of (or maybe greatest hits of) item numbers than in a completely realised, story-based movie experience. He's just beginning to read, so complex plots dependent on subtitles are not what's drawing him.
Right now Mela's on my list, because it had the song that started the damage, Chori Chori Gori Se, but I understand it's not much of a movie otherwise. Should I just go straight to Sholay?
I think JBJ and Dhoom 2 both have terrific songs in them; Sholay doesn't really have any big dance production numbers (though it has charming songs and of course is a great movie). (I haven't seen Mela so I can't comment :-)).
If you want big lush production numbers with crowds of dancers and gorgeous sets, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s your man. (Linking to typical songs from each here), I’d recommend Devdas (2002), Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam, and Saawariya (though songs in Saawariya tend to be slowish tempoed).
Some other movies that have multiple good songs are Bunty aur Babli, Dil Se, Partner (warning, under no circumstances should you actually watch this movie), Don (2006), Guru, Main Hoon Na...
Also, you can get DVDs that are just collections of movie songs. These are really hit or miss, it’s hard to find collections that have more than 4 or 5 good songs on them, though I’m pretty happy with this one (they all have cheesy generic titles like this too). This is an area that needs more dedicated research/shopping on my part. If you feel
