I'm still trying to separate my kneejerk reaction (DO NOT WANT) with the knowledge that this reboot would not be for me, it would be for a new generation of fans. I just can't get past feeling like it would be better to make a new character in the same universe rather than recreating Buffy again.
Buffy being black would make for an entirely different show (and a less white Sunnydale, obviously) and I wouldn't mind seeing that in action, tbh. Feminism has advanced quite a bit since original BtVS' time.
I would definitely be interested in a show about a black slayer with a more diverse cast, and a 2018 spin on the "high school is hell" plots. I'm just not sure what the advantage is to making her Buffy again. Name recognition, I guess, but it just seems like it will inevitably be compared constantly against the old show and never given the opportunity to be its own thing without the drag of the past on it.

Has Joss, though? (I'm asking that question honestly, not snarkily, and I'm not sure we'll have an answer to it until we see some new work from him.)

And the cynical side of me is thinking that as long as it's better than the comics I don't care. (Although it'd be hard to be WORSE than the comics...) Maybe we'd get an actual out gay character? Maybe 'new' Spike & Angel would get more than subtext? /random thoughts, I just woke up
Willow and Tara would like to have a word with you. ;-)
Seriously though, this brings up a whole 'nother question: would a reboot have Angel and Spike? Willow, Giles, Xander? Or would the new Buffy have a new Scooby gang, new enemies, new love interests? I remember reading that Joss was always frustrated with how the fans became so rabidly invested in the 'ships; is that something he would try to remedy by not embedding a "star-crossed lovers" trope into the fabric of the show?
I am also so fricking sick of remakes and reboots. These properties were beloved because they were original in the first place!
Movies are especially terrible recently. I was looking at the line up of big movies slated for 2019 release, and half of them are remakes or more comic book adaptations.
I have been to the movies ONCE this summer. It was for a $6 show of Ocean's Eight (mediocre!), which I only went to because I wanted to see a movie, dammit, but I didn't want it to be a comic book movie.
Not to mention, Hollywood seems to have almost abandoned entire genres: e.g., witty/bantery comedy, sexy romances (that aren't Fifty Shades), sweeping epics, etc. Ugh, yes. There used to be all kinds of movies out during the summer! Where are the summer movies like A League of Their Own, or Clueless, or even Back to the Future? Everything is a remake or a sequel or a retread. And I'd like for those damn kids to get off my lawn too

On a related and even more whiny, shallow, and entitled note, another complaint I have is that this avalanche of comic book movies, remakes, and sequels is also 'sucking up' the time/roles for all the actors I find most attractive/sexy. So they are doing those kind of roles most of the time and, when they are not, they take roles in the most depressing serious dramas (and I don't blame them...at least those are a challenge). But from a viewer looking for something else, I resent that their prime years of attractiveness are being spent doing roles that never capitalize on that quality at all. Seriously, LOOK at how dispiriting next year's film line-up is. (I'm mildly optimistic about The Goldfinch and Artemis Fowl, but goddamn is it looking bleak).
ETA: Bizarrely, the thing that bothers me the most about this is Joss's involvement. I'll always be grateful to him for the original series, but I just don't like the guy any more. Plus, the Buffy comics are so terrible, and the ones he's most involved in are the worst.
Yes, I think a lot of us have, at best, mixed feelings about Joss these days, and I'd really rather him stay away from Buffy at this point. It looks like there will be a different showrunner; I don't know much about her aside from the fact that she worked on Agents of Shield and Fringe, but since Joss has his new HBO project also happening, I get the feeling he might just be tangentially involved.

I also had high hopes that Oceans 8 would be a sparkling summer hit, but after the reviews came out...I figured I'd wait for dvd.

I prefer it not being a straight reboot. At least this way, I think more people will be able to judge it on its own terms
