I KNOW. Aaaah. I was quite pissed off with Joss for not even giving Wes and Fred ONE episode to be happy together. :( But I guess by that point they knew the series was running down so they had to rush through some plot stuff...
Actually Angel's surprise cancellation notice came on Valentine's Day that year, which was 4 days before "Smile Time" was aired, so that whole plot line was planned and filmed and in the can when they thought they were gonna have a 6th Season. (I went and looked it up when I first saw "A Hole in the World" because I wondered if starting to kill off all the chars was Joss being pissed off at the sudden cancellation)
What's most annoying about Angel being canceled like that is that not only was S5 the best creatively, throughout it's whole run it got better ratings than Buffy did, even winning it's time slot many times in all the important areas. The people in charge of the network didn't like the serialized nature of the plots, especially after the disaster that was S4 (remember, this was before Lost was a big hit), and one of the stipulations they put in for being renewed for S5 is that the episodes had to be stand alone . While yes, it was more stand alone episodes in S5, I guess it wasn't good enough for them, or maybe they

I remember reading (I think in the Buffy magazine) that the Wesley/Illira relationship would have been explored in season six if it had been made. I'm still a little angry that there's not a 6th season.
Yeah, I read that too. I'd also read that Joss had planned to have Willow come back and bring Fred back, but keep Illyria, so Amy Acker would be playing two roles. I think that would have been very cool to see, and not just because I adore both Willow and Fred. (the scenes in "Orpheus" between Fred and Willow are the absolute best parts of the whole 4th season)
As for no 6th season....lemme just say, it's a good thing I watched Angel last of Joss's series, because after "Not Fade Away"'s ending, I probably would not have watched Firefly out of protest. Not saying more to save a rant and not spoil mollyringwraith.
Smile Time: AAAAAhahahahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! *sobs with laughter*
Hole in the World: *just plain sobs*
I loved Fred saying "It's my boys!" Warm fuzzies galore. And poor, poor Wesley, for whom nothing seems to just go well, ever. He needs a hug. I volunteer to provide said hug.
"Smile Time" just epitomizes everything I love about S5. When I said "Life of the Party" was my favorite of the ones you'd seen so far, "Smile Time" was the one I had in mind that was better. And then for Joss to follow it up with "A Hole in the World"....you should take the time to watch "Shells" ASAP, because it's so much a companion piece to "A Hole in the World", that they should be watched back to back.
SO much love for S5 here....if I had the time and an empty TiVo, I'd pull out my DVDs and watch it again now. :)
I've seen "Shells" now...*sigh*. Gunn and Wesley both were making me sniffle. The Illyria/Wes thing is getting interesting, but still so painful. All the same, I do like the schizoid nature of S5. Never know what you're gonna get next!

Seriously, why must Wesley's life suck so much? Faith defeating him, Lilah getting killed, now Fred...jeesh.

And A Hole in the World ... sob! So sad, so wonderfully sad. Joss is a Magnificent Bastard ...
