it's 9:30 and i'm pissed off cause i can't sleep. i went to bed at 9 and lay there for half an hour thinking about my class and how i am going to encourage dialogue in it. i really want to start discussing things with them. i feel like i am comfortable enough with them and our routines now to add in some controversy. i feel like i'm ready to ( Read more... )

a good place to start would be www.whiteprivilege.com. i think it's been hard for you to conceptualize white privilege in hawaii because you grow up your whole life seeing yourself as the white minority and all of that. this conversation would be better had in person, of course.

also, i think teaching your kids how to greet one another in hawaiian is important, but do they understand why? is it just novelty to them?

on another note, if you want to work on some projects in your class around family history and tieing it to hawaii like we talked about, i would be glad to help.

where do you teach? ive been so out of touch with everyone for the past year.

i remember when i was in elementary and intermediate. i was so out of place there. i was one of the few locals that went there. anyway, the teachers always had the boys do the carrying things and stuff like that. i remember thinking it was so irritating how the girls did the "girl" stuff and the boys did the "boy" stuff. it made me feels weird like i was only good for certain things especially since i wanted to help carry boxes of books or the crate of milk for lunch. so i think its good that you want to expose your kids to free thinking and such.

The stone was prominent probably because of Stone Wall Inn and what happened there in New York.

Funny you wrote an entry about having a super rad girlfriend on my birthday. Yeah it'd be another five years til we meet and such- also very close to my birthday- but I just couldn't ignore that.
