URGA MOTW

Up in 3D

Pixar's movies are usually brilliant - Up is no exception - but perhaps it was the hype, perhaps it was the content, but I don't feel this is quite near Pixar's best.
Don't get me wrong, it's still great, but I think I enjoyed the Toy Storys, The Incredibles, and Wall-E more.

The plot synopsis: Elderly gentleman Carl Fredericksen, recently widowed, doesn't want to give up his house and all the mementos that remind him of his wife and their joint love of adventure - even though they never managed to make their dream trip to South America during her lifetime. So rather than being forced into a retirement home, Carl floats his house up into the air with millions of balloons and heads south. Young Wilderness Explorer Russell has accidentally stowed away, and Carl reluctantly lets him in and looks out for him. When they arrive at the mysterious Paradise Falls in South America, the adventure begins with a giant colourful bird and a dog that talks via an electronic collar.

Although the characters are adorable, and the imagery is fantastic, and the jokes are funny - it is, on the whole, a somewhat sad movie. The various reminders of Carl's recent loss, plus discussion of Russell's absent father, make a somewhat sad and uncomfortable contrast to the high adventure and fun sequences which are a trademark of all enjoyable kids movies. Perhaps that's why I didn't enjoy it as much as some of the other Pixar films - it wasn't /purely/ fun, but had a lot of grief and loss mixed in.

Still, the animation is top notch, the characters have wonderful expressions, and Kevin (the bird) and Dug (the dog) are hilarious. To be honest, the 3D didn't really add much to this film (unlike Coraline) so I wouldn't be too fussed to see this in 3D.

8/10
