Operator Surrogacy

Surrogates

It is the near future, and almost everybody never leaves their house - they interact in the real world with robot surrogates. Then a weapon is used on a surrogate that kills its operator, and FBI
agent Tom Greer (Bruce Willis) starts getting worried... Throw into the mix the anti-machine Human-only reservationists and a bit of a conspiracy, and what you end up with is... a rather pedestrian sci-fi action movie.

Surrogates isn't a bad movie. But it's just got nothing special. The characters (even when human) are as unemotional as their robotic surrogates, and any depth added to the script (such as Tom's unfortunately dead son) doesn't add any depth to the characters. The action sequences are fine, but once again - nothing special. All the plot twists are easily predictable, and telegraphed a mile away, and things are wrapped up way too neatly. No glaring plot holes, but just things that wouldn't make too much sense if this was the "real world".

Once again, Hollywood has taken a decent sci-fi concept, and instead of exploring the consequences of such a world, they go the easy route with mindless action, and the consequences of the movie upset the world order (leading to chaos, obviously, but we don't see that as the credits roll straight after it happens). Surrogates is of the Paycheck or The Island ilk, and is a world away from intelligent sci-fi drama like Gattaca.
