Christ that was the most terrifying experience! I couldn't find my glasses so the first minute was flying blind, in the dark. I yelped cos I heard something break, and my dvd tower fell over, spilling dvds everywhere. It was just one glass that broke tho; all my photo frames are intact. I thought my computer might have been broken, but it's aaaall ( Read more... )

The blessings, they are counted. Oh that sign...

Once again, glad you're okay!

Oh man, me too.

That sign being broken was weirdly symbolic, you know? Yeah. Fucking scary. I hope I don't have to live through anything like that again, but if it does happen again, I hope I do live through it.

It used to be a chimney, I swear! It came apart in me hands!

I'm real scared of the aftershocks! The ones just before had me and Cath abandoning our dinner and sprinting for the doorway! I also am feeling the phantom tremours, I can figure out whether it is the earth shaking or just my heart beating!

I had a bit of a sleep this arvo, so I slept thru the one at around 5ish, but there have been a couple more since then. Weirdly, me, Helen and Sarah were all sitting in the living room talking, and Sarah said, We haven't felt a tremor in ages, I wonder when the next one will be? and I went, Don't jinx it! and then a minute later, there was one.

Thank you! Yeah, we're ok. It could have been a whole heap worse. My house doesn't have a chimney, so am feeling lucky about that! Other people had chimneys that collapsed onto roofs and things.

Really, we're just lucky that nobody was killed, and only a handful of people really injured. If it had happened a few hours earlier or later, who knows what might have happened.

Yeah, it's good that it happened at that time of night, with as few people as possible around and about. But still, argh, what a shock it must be. :/

Tho I only got an hour and a half of sleep. I'm zombified! I was up late talking to my sister about a family issue, and then the quake hit and obviously sleeping again after that was impossible. It was terrifying! I might have screamed a tiny bit, but just the once.

The worst thing now is the clean-up, and the water and health issues surrounding broken pipes and things. And experts are saying there could be an aftershock almost as strong in the next 48 hrs, tho the more smaller aftershocks we have, the less likely that is, I think. And there have been a lot of smaller ones.

Oh my god! Belated comment is belated, but oh my god. I'm glad you're OK. I've been kind of bidding my time here in LA waiting for the same.

Would you believe it was a quake of exactly the same size as the one in Haiti? And there were no deaths. Well, one guy had a heart attack and died from the shock, and one guy had a chimney fall on him and was in critical condition, but that was it. It's all down to building construction standards, really. Make sure you bracket your bookshelves to the walls. Fix, Fasten, Forget! So your house won't end up bung! (that was an ad here a while ago, I can't find it on youtube tho so you'll have to take my word for it) There's not really much else you can do =/ Aside from make sure you have supplies of emergency water, and a torch by your bed.

Tho for the first time I was glad of having cheap, flimsy furniture, because it moved with the quake and didn't break. You guys have earthquake drills at school, and stuff like that, don't you?
