Moral of the Story... Don't try to win

So I couldn't help but talk about the news story I just read on Yahoo. A coach of a girls basketball team was fired because his team beat another team 100-0 and he would not apologize for the win ( Read more... )

The best argument I've heard is that the coach should have brought in second and third string not to goof off, but to get valuable play time. Players should do their best in competitive sports, but who said the starting line-up must do their best through the whole game? Let the whole team share the load.

Leaving your best players in to run up the score does not teach them to do their best. It teaches them how big the gap in skill level between themselves and their opponents was.

Part of being an athelete is good sportsmanship and having mercy. Sports unlike the real world has rules, refs, and other structres to provided ballance .

When I played Lacrosse and soccer we'd play a variety of teams, sometimes we were alot better then them sometimes we weren't. We'd always try to play teams on the same level as us, but sometimes we'd get schedulled agains't a team that was much better than us or we were much better against.

Once the game was in the bag either way, we used the game as a learning environment to try out new things, we let our defenders play attack, we let our midfields play defense. We tried out new things so that we'd get more out of the game while still being good sportsman.

Sportsmanship is what sports is susposed to be about (its not always like that) but when you have the chance to be the better man, the better sportsman you always should.

At least thats how i feel about this. If you can be a nice guy why not play the part. God knows that there's little enough of it in the world.

I completely understand the concepts you guys are talking about and I know that was thier point. It is only my opinion that everyone is a hypocrite these days.

Sportsmanship is great but it doesn't always apply. Everyone has to take their lumps along with the good times. Sportsmanship aside, punishing someone for winning is stupid and if they had such a difference in skill why were they even playing that game?

I still think kids are getting their hand held too much these days. Either way, they should just move on and learn from it rather than making it such a big deal. Be that a lesson in sportsmanship or never giving up or knowing when to ease up.
