For the time being, I have given up on messes that remake themselves daily and am concentrating on the ones that will stay decent for awhile.

That's a great idea...sadly it's the daily ones that are most noticed and commented on. So far the time thing is working great and we get more reading time together! The unforseen result being I think it will help with her speech.
