it is realistic. topics of STD are just hard to find here because of the social stigma, and the fact that the characters are pretty young, and on the 'innocent' side.
but with the plot you're going, its not surprising for one of the protagonist to have one with his profile and all.

note: you can actually have STDs / HIV even without having sex. you can incur it as what we commonly know, from needles and blood transfusion. There are also stories/(i don't know--proven fact)/theories that you can incur it through kissing. Not because you ingest thousands of saliva and it's absorb through the GI tract. But if you have an open mouth sore, saliva of the infected person, can penetrate the wound, and the virus may enter from there.
