The stadium slowly came to life as technicians and assistants rushed inside. Each carried an array of cases, filled with equipment of various functions and purpose. On the far side of the building, a raven-haired boy burst into one of the dingy bathrooms. Before the door could close, a boy with dreadlocks neatly tied back came in after him. Bill turned around, glaring at who had intruded on his privacy. Their eyes met, and his features softened before turning to stare at the floor.
“How are you feeling?” asked Tom.
“Fine, fine. You know how I get when it’s hot outside.”
“Yeah, I do,” he replied. Crossing his arms, he leaned against the door as if to keep out any unwanted visitors. He watched Bill.
“Remember that summer before we met David?” He looked up from the spot on the floor.
“The one we spent every day up in the attic?”
“Yeah, mom thought we were trying to be vampires.”
“But we had a fort.”
“The hideout, from the heat,” he said, allowing a smile to creep across his face. “Too bad it didn’t really work.”
Tom smiled back and dropped his gaze. He fidgeted in his place, tapping his shoes lightly on the floor. A moment passed, the buzz of the fluorescent light resounded in the small room. He sighed.
“You know that’s not what I meant.”
“Well what did you expect me to say?”
“I don’t know Bill. Maybe how you’re felling?”
“Terrible. I’m scared, I can’t stop shaking, and I want nothing more than to crawl back into bed. There, happy?”
“You could have said that from the start.”
“I know,” he said irritably. “But I just wanted to-”
“Let me see, avoid it?”
“No, not entirely. Just lighten the mood a little,” he countered as he turned his head away from Tom.
“Bill, you know you can’t. We can’t. Now what did David say to you?”
“I already told you in my text,” he replied. He looked back at Tom, his voice low. “Everyone’s on edge about it.”
“I’ve noticed. The other guys barely said anything this morning.”
“I know,” he said. Bill shifted nervously in his spot. He shivered, rubbing his hands up and down his arms. “What do you want to do about it?”
“Nothing, just leave them alone to deal with what’s fact.”
“That’s you’re plan? Ignore them?”
“No, not ignore them. Just give them some space, you know? Some time to think about it, that’s all.”
“Are you listening to yourself? They’re not talking to us! Obviously they’re disgusted. Does that not bother you at all?” He was becoming frantic as he spoke.
“Of course it does! But they can get over that and deal with it. How is this harming them, Bill? Just give them time to get over it.”
“You don’t get it Tom! Do I need to remind you about what David said to me? Think about it. Think about what he can do,” he said, trembling in his place. He wiped at his eyes with his sleeve, trying to be subtle about it and run his fingers through his hair.
“Bill, don’t cry,” he said softly, dropping his guard from the door as he stepped away. He placed his hand on Bill’s arm. He turned away, ashamed to have been caught.
“I just don’t know what to do,” he whispered softly.
“I don’t either. I’m just as scared and confused about this as you are,” he replied as he stepped closer to Bill. Tom brought his hand to his face and ran his fingers against Bill’s cheek, coming to rest at the curve of his jaw. Bill leaned into the touch, allowing Tom to place a light kiss on his lips. He wrapped his arms around Tom, still shaking as he did so. He was happy to have his twin, regardless of their circumstance. He relaxed a little as Tom drew circles on his back.
“I don’t want to lose you Tomi,” he whispered. It was barely audible, but Tom had heard it. His fingers stopped wandering on Bill’s back as he pulled his brother closer. The arms around him tightened their grip, and Bill burried his head into the crook of Tom’s neck. They jumped apart as Bill’s phone went off.
“Who is it?” Tom asked as Bill looked at his phone.
“David,” he replied. The name hung over them, a black spot ripping through purity.
“Don’t answer it. But lets get out of here, okay? We’ve gotta keep up with the schedual.”
Bill only nodded in reply.
