More good news!
We got a dog on Sunday!!! Owen is 1.5 years, a Black Mouth Cur / pit bull mix, about 60 lbs, brindle and looks a lot like our dear departed Bailey. So far he has done very well here, clearly delighted to be out of the shelter after 2 months in a small room. We got him at the Ulster County SPCA - the nicest of the various rescue/shelter/pound

I recommend posting on allthingsdog and dogsintraining with your questions. Fwiw, my thoughts:
What were the exact circumstances when he growled at C? Did she move in any way? Say something loudly/make a loud noise? Was his bowl still there? It's hard to say without knowing the exact circumstances.
As for the first meeting, the Alpha thing has been discredited, but at the same time, he needs to know that when you and your husband speak, he needs to listen. That said, positive training is the way to go. I think - though I have no idea if I'm right - maybe he and your husband should meet on neutral ground, like out for a walk. See if your husband can take the leash at some point, feed him treats, basically make himself attractive. Then go inside together and have your husband feed him. Then have him do at least some of the feedings and walks 'til Owen realizes you're both fixtures in his life. That's my thought, anyway.
