Somewhat to my surprise, I realized today that I’ve missed Detroit in more ways than I had imagined. Of course, the city is easier to love when it’s not covered in ice and dirty snow. oh wow, I have never been to Detroit but that city fascinates me in that it is like this ruin of the Gilden Age! There's a great website that started in the early web days called the Fabulous Ruins of Detroit that I still visit. Check it out. My husband is never into taking a vacation there, but I really want to go because they are ripping down all the old buildings.

Yes, the Fabulous Ruins site is definitely worth a visit, even though some bemoan the falling-down image the site’s popularity promotes. By design, the site does not, of course, highlight the good news about the city. Two years ago, with a world premiere opera, baseball game, and some other big event downtown, I was actually caught in a traffic jam on a Saturday night in Detroit. It was unexpected and in retrospect, refreshing.

With its French colonial heritage, poisonous racial politics (past and present) and acres of desolation as a result of an unnatural disaster, Detroit has more than a little in common with New Orleans
