Rape and Racism: Why Tufts didn’t care I was Raped

from Raped at Tufts
A rapist has taken away perhaps the most fundamental right that any human being has, and one that all women, people of color, trans people, and children have stolen from them on a regular basis: the right to control one’s own body. The impacts of this theft of choice can last a lifetime.

I was raped on the UC Santa Cruz campus by several men over the course of a summer. I was a former student, having finally decided to take some time off due to the intrusive flashbacks and dissociation I already experienced regularly as a result of my stepfather having molested and raped me as a child. My mother and her husband responded to this decision by cutting me off financially, and as there are few if any jobs available in Santa Cruz and college students tend to have first priority I was homeless due to a lack of cash at the time ( ... )

Thanks for sharing this with me and I am so sorry for what happened to you. It is mindblowing that these cops did not even know sexual violence 101 - just because an evidence collection kit doesn't show forced entry, it doesn't mean that rape did not happen! Most assaults don't leave evidence of physical trauma.

You're right. That school has a responsibility to respond to crimes that happen on their campus. I wonder if they even counted those events in their records; obviously these men are menaces to the area and they will keep on going until they are stopped.

Again, I'm so sorry for what happened. Classism and racism is rampant when dealing with sexual violence at the institutional level. It's fucking infuriating.
