The Good Guess Trivia

Dec 05, 2007 09:38

Thanks to all those who joined in the guessing game yesterday. However, as no riddles came forth, I'm going to make that an optional step. Guessing my riddle is good enough.

The word I was looking for: clove

Correct guessers: crabbycool, Anon (50% right)

Decrypting the riddle:

a wannabe flower, no treasure for a bee: Cloves are the aromatic dried flower buds of a tree in the family Myrtaceae.

a french nail? not really: The name derives from French "clou", a nail, as the buds vaguely resemble small irregular nails in shape.

crackle on a smoker's lips: Kretek (krē'tek) are cigarettes made with a complex blend of tobacco, cloves and a flavoring 'sauce'. The word "kretek" itself is an onomatopoetic term for the crackling sound of burning cloves. ......... I thought this was a dead giveaway.

an ailing molar's first bliss: Cloves are used in Ayurveda, Chinese medicine and western herbalism and dentistry where the essential oil is used as an anodyne for dental emergencies.

a cook's million dollar secret: Cloves have historically been used in Indian cuisine (both North Indian and South Indian) as well as in Mexican cuisine.

once worth it's weight in roman gold!: Cloves, along with nutmeg and pepper, were highly prized in Roman times..... Clove was then one of the most valuable spices, a kg costing around 7 g of gold.

Souce: Clove on wiki.

Give me your suggestions/feedback on making this more fun. :)

a good guess
