So my last post I was finishing up my first semester at Cornish and feeling a little down about it. Or up and down, if you prefer.
Well, my second semester at Cornish definitely went a little better. I felt more confident with what I was doing, and what I was learning. Both of my art history classes (basic art history, covering prehistoric art to the medieval ages and a history of design class) really widened my perspective of what I'm doing and how to include work that has already been done in my work as inspiration. After all, it has ALL already been done. This doesn't phase me. I'm cool with it. I've found that my niche really is the hand-drawn lovely quality style found in the arts and crafts movement and art nouveau movements. I will continue to work to develop my designs to be geared more in the style, with my own modern take.
My Drawing 3 class was interesting, and it was nice to have a class that didn't involve a whole lot of effort or extra out of class time, but it was just one of those things that I really only needed just to graduate. Same with my figure drawing class -- I wish I could have gotten more out of it, but it was definitely geared more towards people that had never drawn humans from life before, and since I had I didn't get much out of it. It was going to be my easy "A" but I did skip a couple assignments and since there weren't that many, I may have just screwed myself in that class. Oops.
My illustration class was the one that I think I enjoyed the most. Drawing for design -- it was enjoyable and nice. I would say I'm definitely not the best at it, but I wasn't the worst either and I wasn't bad for it being my first time! This is a skill I would definitely like to develop more and maybe even look into for a career. Illustrators can make pretty good money -- lots of people can design but not everyone can illustrate! :)
I'm expecting an A in the History of Design class and probably the Figure Drawing Class, as well as the Art History class and then a B+ in my Illustration class and probably in my Drawing 3 class. Not bad, but I probably should have gotten all As if I had put in a little more effort.
And as to the proposal, for those that didn't know, I had been dating my boyfriend for nearly two years and asked him almost daily to marry me! I've known he was the one for months! We have been waiting for him to get a job to get enough money to the buy the ring. Well he worked a contract job testing for Bungie on the new Halo: Reach game through most of the summer (June-August) which was a pretty pitiful pay but lots of overtime hours which was a miserable experience but got him lots of money. Well, enough to pay rent anyway. Seemed like a lot since he hadn't been making any before, just getting monthly payments from his mom! That contract ended and it was hard to find another job, but he got a paid internship/contract job as a game designer, his preferred career track, at a start-up company making facebook games. Unfortunately the start-up company was less-than-innovative and didn't have a lot of dough, and Erick's checks were taking a long time to be mailed!
Anyway so I thought. It was true that his checks were taking a while to come through, but eventually they did.. without my knowledge! So he finally had the money to buy the ring and did so secretly, searching through all the jewelers in the area.
He had been planning on proposing for months, but finally got the ring around Thanksgiving.. but my parents went out of town for my Dad's graduation so they weren't around for Erick to ask for my hand! He had to wait til they returned, which was only a few days before his family would arrive for the holidays. And also my finals week. And he wanted to propose in private, before his family showed up.
So he proposed during finals. Oi.
I was super stressed out, trying to get the apartment ready for his family to be here, trying to get all my shit together for finals, doing projects and studying for tests, etc. It was a tuesday, and Erick was supposed to be at work. I had a morning class from 9-12 and my mom volunteered to drive me (she usually goes in that direction for her bible study but it was over for the holidays.. so I thought she was just driving me to be nice and it was rainy!). I got a ride home and was planning in my mind how I was going to hammer out an essay due the next day, and then study for a test in the same class. I open the door.. and there are rose petals all along the little hallway that passes the kitchen and bathroom and leads to the living room.. but the rose petals led to the bedroom. I was so confused as to why Erick would leave all this stuff for me when he was at work! Bemused, I set my stuff down and followed the trail, could hear music from the bedroom, Erick's favorite song for us "Besame Mucho", and the rose petals were on our made bed as well, with a bouquet of white roses and colored christmas lights.
From around the corner comes Erick, dressed in a suit, with a little box in his hand.. and suddenly he's down on one knee! I'm in such shock I don't even know what to do.. and he proposes to me and opens the box and there's the perfect ring.. Later he told me he actually opened the box upside down but I didn't even notice because I was so shocked! He was shaking when he put the ring on my finger and I was shaking from the adrenaline and just bawling my eyes out. I told him "of course."
And that was that. Boy, was it hard to concentrate on homework that I really needed to do after that!
The ring is gorgeous, just what I wanted, a nice diamond, not too big in the middle, with two deep blue sapphires on the side. It's antique-y style with lots of detail in filigree on the sides, and smaller diamonds going down the ring after the sapphires. Everyone just thinks its lovely.
Today I had my first time wedding dress shopping. Found 3 ones that we liked, and narrowed it down to two. From the designer lines at Davids Bridal. I wasn't expecting to find anything since they all look like cheap dresses. Don't get me wrong -- I don't want an expensive dress, but I don't want mine to look cheap either! I would describe what they look like, but I'm too afraid my fiancee might find this page! Hehe. I've got another appointment on wednesday that is a place that sells sample designer gowns -- so dresses that other brides have tried on, but never worn in a wedding. Definitely excited to get a designer gown at a good price! Really good reviews for this store, and I found them because I actually designed their blade sign and window decals while I was at my summer internship at a sign company.
Anyway my train of thought is derailing due to food.. needing.. so.. I'm goin to wrap it up.
Reminder to self: Rant about little sister's stupidness later.
