Kids NEED coping skills! It is our job as parents to teach those skills.
I HATED all that "building character" shit when I was a teenager, but I'm so glad my dad refused to coddle me. (My mom did a bit, which I needed, but my dad was mostly a hardass, which was so great.) "No, life is not fair. Yes, that will suck sometimes. Figure out how to deal with it. It's not my job to make sure your life is perfect. The end."

My child is grown and has given me grandchildren, but trust me when I say that I have seen the evidence of just how right you are. Let's just say that "special needs" are even often a mistake.
ADD? How many kids do you suppose can just "pay attention" at the age of 6? As far as I'm concerned, ADD is a diagnosis thought up by teachers who are too lazy to teach any child who isn't a perfect learning machine, and for parents to absolve themselves of responsibility.
Any child you hand an excuse like that to, will use it for the rest of their lives unless they are rescued by a good slap of reality.
