Seventeen years ago, “prom” was still “the prom,” still preceded by its definite article, Heathers’ influence not yet taken hold across the country. Other than that, it was depressingly similar:

Asked by the right boy? Check.
Gotten her hopes way, way up? Check.
Been horribly let down? Check.

She tore through the drawers in the kitchen, hunting for the paperwork. Whenever he came home she was going to make him sign. Better, she’d bring it to the hospital.

She was done. They were done. She was through trying, because he’d never tried at all.
