Over this last week, I've had the immense pleasure of creating, defining, and building two characters in games I've never played before. Actually, the building was less fun because of the systems involved, but anyway

I mostly seem to play characters with troubled pasts; the first 2 being hedgehogs as well.
Shadow: He was a created lifeform whose adopted sister was killed in front of him. He has bouts of memory loss caused by his fall from the atmoshpere shortly after being ejected from the station he was made on.
Zephyr: Similar to Shadow, seeing as he was a hybrid clone of him and Sonic. Has trouble finding himself as he has 2 pairs of shoes he has to fill. His family are everything to him. Had at somepoint been granted great power which has opened up a dark side to him.
Tordek: Son of the dwarven kingdom rulers, seeking to make his own way in the world, finds his parents are dead and his Uncle seeks to take the throne, which would have been his if not for changes in the rules Tordek's father made; it resulted in Tordek being next in line for the throne.
Skillswise, I tend to play characters who are alright in a fight, but not pure in-your-face combat. I like them to have stealth skills and subsidiary abilities too, because I like them to have more than one option for dealing with trouble. I also tend to pick athletics or acrobatic or whatever it is in system, primarily as wish fulfillment.
Morally and personality wise, they have to be enough like me that we would get on, if we met. Otherwise I couldn't play them. Their moral standards don't have to exactly match mine, but they have to be things that I can understand, given their differing circumstances of existence.
I tend to play characters who don't, strictly speaking, need anyone else. As in, if everyone around them snuffed it, they'd cope. I don't know if that's an expression of me or a bit more wish fulfilment though.
Overall then, it's usually me, adapted to setting, then with some things exaggerated and some minimised.
I tend to play characters who are so naive and enthusiastic that they get mocked/disdained by the rest of the party. Full of justice and vim and well-meaning charisma! It's not really me, but it's what I wish the world was like, sometimes: full of kind people who want to do the right thing and stand up for those who can't. Also it's just really, really fun to play. ;)
I also tend to play characters who are bolder and more confident than me. In that respect, I sometimes wish I could be like that.
I've played other character types as well, but I always gravitate to the shiny, bombastic paladins of the world...
