Oh my god, this was supposed to be a quick one-shot and yet I've been slaving over it for weeks. Stupid, stupid writer's block, and new fandom block, and ideas that span the whole damn series and thus require me to re-watch every episode, so as to recreate setting properly. The only thing that's stopping me from writing it is the regeneration. No idea what Smith's Doctor'll be like, and according to IMDb Jack's only going to show up in Tennant's last episode, so...le sigh.

I love that Jack exposes his story to this stranger he meets in a bar. It took me by surprise, incidentally, because in fiction with immortals (who are often vampires), the usual trope I'm familiar with is: immortal ponders telling a mortal his story, and doesn't, because They Would Never Understand.
So I enjoyed that reversal, intentional or not, and of itself it's a great scenario. I could well believe Jack would look for forgiveness from anyone he could meet after what happened in CoE. I imagine he feels worlds away from the Doctor, whose approval he's tried to earn for so long. So, naturally, I loved the last line a lot. So affecting. Poor Jack! *sympathy tear*
Rambling a bit, anyway... Great fic. :)

And I doubt that Jack's going to tell the girl in the bar literally everything -- like, I doubt he's gonna tell her that he's immortal, because that would beg all kinds of inappropriate questions. But so far as his feelings for Ianto were concerned, and the roundabout route they took to getting where they got -- that's just human nature. And so he could tell someone mortal about that, even though in the end she didn't understand. Or at least, Jack thinks she didn't.
And I really need to talk myself out of Jack meeting up with Ten and getting himself fixd up a bit, because I'm just going to get jossed in a couple months. Grumble.
