Name: Daken (birth name - Akihiro)
Fandom: Marvel
Age: Looks mid-twenties, but in reality is around 68.
Point in Canon: Immediately after Wolverine Origins #48
History: Daken should never have been alive. His mother, Itsu, was murdered by the Winter Soldier while he was still in the womb. He survived thanks to the healing factor he inherited from his father, Wolverine, and the aid of Romulus, who cut him from his dead mother’s womb. He was left on the porch of a wealthy Japanese couple who, as they were having difficulties conceiving themselves, adopted the godsend as their own, and named him Akihiro. Under the tutelage of his father, Akihira, he was raised to be the perfect gentleman and suitable heir to the family name. Akihira would have been successful had the other villagers not mocked and teased young Akihiro, calling him Daken (mongrel dog) because of his mixed heritage and shunned him. Their behavior fueled the otherwise well-hidden animal within him, causing him to slowly embrace it.
His dark side first emerged at the start of his teenage years, when he killed a neighborhood boy who had bullied him. He found that he rather enjoyed the act of killing, but for his father’s sake would have tried to suppress that urge had he not stumbled upon his adoptive parents speaking one night, his mother expressing her fear of him to his father. The real crippling news was that they had finally gotten pregnant. He knew that it was only a matter of time before he was completely cast aside. Any love that he might have had for his mother died that day. When the child was born, he quickly removed her from the picture, and then taunted his mother about what he had done. He and his father fought over what he had done, and in the process he was disowned. His mother tried to kill him, and that was the day he first drew his bone claws-and accidentally killed his mother with them. Overcome with grief Akihira killed himself, leaving the bitter teen alone.
Daken wasn’t alone for long, for Romulus appeared to reclaim the child, and took him under his wing. Under Romulus’ strict guidance, Daken was trained to be a killer, honing his killer instincts. During this time, he lost complete touch with his humanity. He became Romulus’ tool to be used whenever and wherever he pleased.
He quickly found that he didn’t like the way Romulus ran things, but respected him for his power. He realized that the only way to gain freedom was to follow his lead. The more loyalty he showed to Romulus, the more freedom he was given. He reclaimed part of his humanity, using Romulus’ vast fortune to live a lavish lifestyle. As time passed, his life of began to balance out, and he embraced both completely. And slowly he began plotting the quickest way to succeed Romulus and taken over his vast, shadowy empire.
And then, just as Daken was beginning to get complacent with his lifestyle, Romulus decided to drop a bombshell on him-he told him who his father was. Sure, he had known who Wolverine was, Romulus had told him many stories about how Wolverine was once one of them, but had foolishly chosen to rebel. He had grown to hate Wolverine, as that man actually had freedom, while Daken only had the illusion of it. And to think, that man was his father.
He began to obsess over Wolverine, goading him into several battles to try to show that he was the newer, better model, the more powerful of the two mutants. Romulus was less than pleased, and revealed that, although he had rebelled against him since day one, Wolverine was in the running to succeed him. This didn’t sit too well with Daken, and while he was still seething, he was approached by Norman Osborn to join his team of Avengers. Masquerading as his father proved to be a good stress reliever, but just as quickly as it began, it ended, with the fall of Asgard and the reign of Osborn.
Having escaped capture in Oklahoma, he tricked Romulus and Wolverine into a fight, a plan which ultimately backfired. He experienced his first real loss at the hands of his father, and with that loss he lost his two wrist claws, which he had covered in the muramasa blade-the one thing that could kill his father. He had just recovered from his wounds physically when he had been transported to the island of the fates.
Personality: On the surface, Daken can appear to be quite the charmer, with a disarming personality and a friendly ear. All of which are a lie. Daken cares about one person and one person only-himself. He views people as toys or puppets to be used at his whim. Any connection he may try to forge with someone is a false one, carefully concocted to further his own, often hidden, agenda (although he might find this more difficult to do with the loss of his pheromone manipulation). In terms of real connections, Daken is completely clueless. He has no idea how to form a normal, human relationship (although it’s important to note that this is out of personal preference rather than an inability to grasp the concept). He just doesn’t care.
Daken also has a massive ego. Everything in his world revolves around him, and if you aren’t considered useful by his standards, prepare to be ignored or cast aside. He also believes himself to be superior to all those around him, but he’s intelligent enough to hide this fact from others. In fact, he prefers to allow others to think that they’re in charge-he finds them easier to manipulate that way. Besides, he knows whose really in charge, and that’s all that matters. They’ll figure out the error in their ways soon enough.
One of the things he prides himself in is his taste. He has an aristocratic sense of culture, stemming from the way he was raised by his adoptive parents in Japan. He’s interested in languages (he’s mastered at least 5-Japanese, English, Italian, Greek, and Arabic), classics, operas, fancy cars and expensive clothes. For the sake of learning and understanding other cultures (a necessary evil in order to properly manipulate others), he will learn about the lesser things, but does not enjoy them. He’d much rather read Hamlet than turn on the TV, but he has a basic understanding of pop culture, just in case.
The one thing that goes against his aristocratic mindset is his ruthlessness and vicious temper. He won’t think twice to kill another if it’s in his best interest (or he’s bored) and he harbors no guilt for the lives he’s taken. As for his temper, he’s not easy to set off, but should you push the correct, carefully concealed buttons, look out. He’s out for blood, and he won’t rest until he has that of the person who wronged him. When worked up in a rage, he devolves into an animalistic state, and all traces of his former self disappear. The angrier he is, the less human-and less clever-he becomes.
People refer to him as bisexual, but he’s really not fond of that label. It conveys the opinion that he finds the people he’s fucking attractive in some way. In reality, sex is simply one of the many tricks in his arsenal to get what he wants. He knows that human beings like sex and typically equate sex with intimacy, so if a quick fuck gets him into someone’s confidences quicker, he sees no need to expend his energy pursuing other routes. And if sex is just the means to an end, what does it matter if the partner is male or female?
Items/things: His old Wolverine costume, the fine Italian clothes on his back, and expensive as hell sunglasses
Abilities: Daken was born with heightened senses and the ability to manipulate the phermones of others, both of which he is displeased to discover don’t seem to work in Isola de Sorte. He also has an accelerated healing factor which, although still there, has slowed. At least he can still pop out his bone claws (well, the ones his father didn’t remove from him, anyway).
On top of his mutant abilities, he’s also a highly skilled fighter. He’s a skilled martial artist with quick reflexes honed through years of training. He’s also been trained as a samurai, and as such is knowledgeable with a sword and a bow and arrow, although he prefers to use his claws.
