I don't know why I find mortality tables so interesting. Everyone knows that our life expectancies are about 74 years for men and 79 years for women. But that is just an estimate of how long a new baby born today will live. If you are a man and you *survive* to age 74, the tables predict a life expectancy of another 10 years! Yesterday I took care of a patient in the ER who had been ripped apart by a tiger. The patient had been found on the side of the road with his neck torn wide open one of his ears ripped off.
