strike vote

Well, my work voted 80% to strike. This makes sense. The rationale is that management has not met their basic legal obligations, and the only way to compel them with the law to meet those obligations is to vote to strike. We expect a resolution long before any picket lines go up.

But! If picket lines do go up, then I am screwed. Strike pay is $200 per week, but I pay $700+ for rent in my nice 2-bedroom apartment. And if the management decides to just wash out the season and say, "See you in Summer or Fall" well, I am done for. I only have two months' money saved up! I am not sure if I have worked the required hours for EI to kick in yet - although I bet I am close.

I already have concluded that I am absolutely not returning to this job in September. I need something new, and I only need around $1500 a month to squeak by, and $2000 a month to be secure. There has to be a job someplace where I can do that. I expect to get a haircut when my contracts are finished and start looking for ordinary jobs. Basically, a job that pays $13 an hour and gives me 29 hours of work a week would allow me to get by. I would be better off on EI of course - isn't that always the way - but my major concern right this minute is that I might be unemployed a month and a half earlier than I expected, with one month less money saved up than I planned, and not have EI to ride.

On the other, other hand! If I went on strike, I could send my girlfriend into the library to get me books. And then...I could write essays! Glorious, glorious essays!
