LJ Idol Week 8 - Sit Down and Shut Up - Ranting LJ style

It’s just early November, but apparently it’s already “the most won-der-ful time of the year…”

And just what time of year could I mean? Certainly not Christmas! But perhaps I am mistaken? I mean, the cornucopia and crispy fall leaves on my office calendar tell me it’s only the second week of November, yet Wal-Mart has already been hocking Hannah ( Read more... )

Ah the joys of Wal-Mart. Thank the gods for online shopping. i can avoid the Christmas rush (even in late October) and only deal when i want to click!

We have the monstrosity that is a SUPER Wal-Mart so we grocery shop there once a week.

I do all my Christmas gift shopping online too - eBay, Amazon and Barnes and Noble.Com, baby!

I live in the sticks, so my choices are Food Lion or Super Wal-Mart. Food Lion is closer, so they usually win, but Super Wal-Mart has a *way* better selection, particularly in the fresh foods end of the world.

Speaking of which, I need to go see my hairdresser there later today...

Ha! We lived in the middle of nowhere until August and the Super Wal-Mart down there was literally at the end of my street, exactly one mile from my house.

I bought food there, got my eyebrows waxed and my toenails painted there...they even had a McDonalds inside!

I think the earliest I ever saw Christmas decorations on sale in the UK was August... And I've seen Christmas decorations up from the beginning of November, which makes no sense when you're the kind of person that puts them up overnight on Christmas Eve to make the morning all the more special for the children. It's not so bad in NZ but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

Completely see where you're coming from. Does *anyone* like seeing Christmas paraphernalia this early???

I agree! I think dragging a holiday out for two months completely takes away from the magic.

We go to the Christmas tree farm the week before Christmas to keep things new and sparkly and aren't going to see Santa until the 18th of December...you know, to help him "remember" the kid's three Christmas wishes!

God, this is a pet peeve of mine, one time Dad and I walked into The Bay (Canadian store), and it wasn't quite Halloween--yet... and these ladies were decorating a Christmas tree. Dad and I stood there, "Excuse me, can we get Halloween over first!" I was disgusted!!!!

Great writing and great entry overall!

Thanks so much! On October 30th when we were there I was astounded at their...audacity. It just seemed kind of shameless, lol.

I refuse to do anything Christmas before thanksgiving. Usually people think I am the Grinch for this, so I enjoyed your rant and am glad I am not alone.

Me too! I don't Christmas shop, don't decorate - I try to even avoid *looking* at the stuff they've put out!!

They are the pits. I was in Wal-Mart on Christmas Eve in 2004 - there was a gift i thought my husband had bought my child already that we discovered we'd forgotten, so I zoomed over to Wal-Mart. It was bedlam! Pure mass mayhem.

People were yanking stuff off the shelf as someone else reached for it...I was embarrassed to even be a part of such a crazy display.
So much for the altruism of human beings. It was every bargain hunter for themselves that night!

A sure-fire way to lose your faith in humanity is to work in a mall at Christmas. One year I managed the Santa Photo booth in the mall. ::shudder:: I still have PTSD from that.
