[So this was Hakkai's childhood?
Yukari knew something of it. Not a great deal - Hakkai preferred not to speak of his time as Gonou, and Yukari respected that in that she knew how far was too far to push. She did not ask for details, but she knew that he was an orphan. That he was raised in a place such as this. As a Catholic, of all things.
She is not surprised to know that his childhood was troubled. That he was a strange, morbid little boy. One who didn't know what it meant to be afraid. She can't remember clearly being so young, but she recalls vaguely being smaller, the size of a human no older then eleven or twelve, wandering barefoot in the mountains. Having no connections, no friends, and no fear. Not so different from this boy - or perhaps she was more like the man made out of leaves?]

[ Is this a dream, a memory or a combination of the two? Well, the people here fascinate, and this dream abundantly more so than the litter of pornography found on the hitomi. ]
[ Well. This seems to be a chipper one. Happier than the default personality of the average Kannagarian, if anyone living here could be considered average. ]
You may call me L.
That's unfortunate. There's nothing to be done about it as long as we remain trapped.
[Curious? He's been accused of so much worse, it's amusing. L thinks he notes a slight chide in the final sentence. If this man is calling him out on his lack of social skills, he's in for a show. ]
Well. Isn't everyone? Aren't you curious as to the why behind our captivity here?
[L pauses before he asks, almost an afterthought. ]
I am curious about it, as a matter of fact. Myself and my friend have done some extended exploration of the desert regions of this place in an attempt to find a way back.
[That sunshiny smile doesn't leave, doesn't falter for a moment. It's very much in place, very much his default.]
I'm Cho Hakkai. It's nice to meet you, L. Have you been here long?

[There are many things that Konan could comment on, in this dream. Hakkai knows what it means to be an orphan--she had not known that--a pain of loss not easily shared, hard to describe. It is, she thinks, the reason that she and Nagato and Yahiko understood each other, the thread the bound them.
There is injustice and cruelty. These things might have been a concern of Nagato's, and she is used to sharing those concerns but...
But.
She isn't sure. Something might have changed. Something might not have. Many things are confused.
[Another pause, and then there is paper in her hands, crisp and undisturbed.]
That is a difficult question to answer.
[Konan places the first fold.]
Perhaps it might be easier to start with how you are.
[She's not avoiding answering. If Hakkai asks, she will tell him. But her troubles may not be what he wishes to hear, so early into renewed correspondence.]
[And now it might become apparent that the smile is not really as nice as it seemed at first. It might be a little scary. He was happy to see Konan, of course, but...]
How is Yukari? Have you seen her lately?
[This is a test. No matter what kind of connection they held before, if Konan keeps the copmany of Yukari, they cannot hope to be friends.]

You were an adorable child, Hakkai.
Even if you didn't know how to love.
Reply
You would find that sort of child to be cute, wouldn't you?
Reply
I always find you cute, Hakkai. You were certainly a great deal more charming than those other little bastards.
[A pause, and then a sly look.]
Who was the one person?
The human.

[And the smile just got turned up 10volts of scary.]

Mmm. [ A sip of tea warms L's throat. ]
I see you were also an orphan.
Do you remember your parents?
Reply
I do not.
You're the curious type, aren't you? [Have a cheery smile.] Asking questions before you've introduced yourself.

So she begins simply.]
Hakkai-san.
[A breath, a pause, a moment of hesitation.]
It has been a long time since we last spoke.
Reply
It has. Not since...
[He can't say it.]
