*Fights with qigong. Turns into a youkai when his limiters are removed. His teeth become fangs, his good eye gains a catlike slit, his fingernails grow to talons and his ears taper to points, and vines wrapping themselves over his skin.
Hakkai is a mature, intelligent and levelheaded person. He has a subtle-yet-cutting sense of humor and isn't above using it. He is the peacemaker of his group of friends, easily switching hats between trusted friend, teacher and makeshift mother figure. He thrives on taking care of people and making things run smoothly, but sometimes it's unclear if it's out of altruism or because no one else can do it correctly. That being said, much of Hakkai's gentleness is genuine. He gets along well with children, and demonstrates a great deal of conscience and empathy. He tends to give things a lot of careful thought, unless it's a situation that involves aiding the helpless or rescuing a friend, then he charges in full-throttle without considering the cost - especially if it's only himself at risk. However, his unshakable sense of mild-mannered cheer sometimes gives a sense of floating detachment from the emotional reality of various situations, as if he's not all there. Because of that, he's not a person who's easily riled up - but a lot of that smile is affectation.
Though definitely the 'calm one' out of his group of his friends, he's also, in many ways, the most ruthless. Behind his mask of cheer is someone who'll go that extra length for a grim, inappropriate punchline or a passive-aggressive joke that highlights someone else's faults. Just because Hakkai's smiling doesn't mean he's necessarily thinking nice thoughts. In fact, it's often pretty difficult to understand what Hakkai is thinking. He'll take you to task for not taking out the garbage, cut you down to size for your attitude problem, and then beat you at cards all with that near-same, placidly smiling expression. Because of this, he's the one his friends fear most, even though he's not the leader and not the most physically dangerous. Hakkai rarely ever loses this veneer, and when finally does snap and completely lose his temper, great destruction is always to follow.
His seemingly cheerful and likable personality and his drive to care for others are the only way Hakkai can gloss over his deep self-loathing and live on day-to-day. Hakkai sees his life as penance, and any suffering that comes his way deserved. While he's started anew, it's important to keep in mind that within him are the aspects of someone who once committed mass murder for his lover, and was transformed into a youkai because of it. It may never be shown in any outward, noticeable way, but Hakkai has not forgotten. His friends are his whole world. He will not tolerate what's precious to him being taken away.
