“What do you think is out there?”
They’re in Keito’s room; Keito sits on the floor, leaning against his bed frame while he worries himself over his English draft due the next day, and Yuuto sprawls himself across his bed while he alternates reading chapters in his mystery novels and playing 20 questions with his friend. If Keito wasn’t used to it by now it might have been annoying, but he barely even glances away from his laptop as he spits out answers without thinking.
“Probably aliens… different kinds, though. Different species, or races.”
“What’s love?”
This does have Keito looking up, glancing over his shoulder at the other boy to see that Yuuto has placed his book down and his now looking at him expectantly. It’s the most serious question he’s asked so far, and Keito looks away again so it’s not obvious how much he’s worrying over the answer. “Love… is complicated. It’s wanting to do everything you can to make someone happy, but wanting them to yourself.”
He half expects Yuuto to press for more when he remains silent, but the younger boy moves on. “What would make you happiest?”
If Yuuto is going to keep asking the difficult stuff Keito’s going to have to set aside his homework for the moment. He sighs and leans his head back against the bed, looking up at the ceiling. You. You’d make me happiest.
But Keito has long resigned himself to accepting that he should be happy with what he has, and he goes for a joking alternative instead. “As long as Yutorin is happy I’ll be happy,” he laughs, shying away when Yuuto flicks him on the head.
“Aa, so Keito must love me~” Keito freezes in horror- he hadn’t realized the connection between his two answers until that moment- but Yuuto continues before he can splutter out an explanation. “What am I to you?”
He lets out a long sigh, because it’s hard to explain how Yuuto is everything and nothing to him at the same time. “You’re… the sun. You’re warm and bright, and being near you makes me- a-and everyone else, everyone feel warm. And…”
“And what?” Yuuto has somehow gotten extremely close to him, leaning over him and looking down at him expectantly. He can’t move his head without risking them smacking together, so he averts his eyes and squirms uncomfortably.
“And… it hurts to look at you, sometimes. You’re too bright, you’re…” Not mine.
They both fall silent, and Keito is silently kicking himself because wow, that could be taken as pretty mean. “Uh, I didn’t mean it like that, I-!”
“Then close your eyes!”
Yuuto is leaning in to kiss him before Keito can process the command.
