9. You can't stay mad at someone who makes you laugh.
There were many things Yamada liked about Yuto. But phone calls at 2:30 in the morning were not one of them.
“Yama-chan! Are you awake?”
“… I am now, idiot.”
He can practically hear the sheepish grin on Yuto’s face from the other end, and it almost makes him smile but it’s 2:30 in the morning, so this better be good. “Whaddya want?”
“I wanted to tell you about the dream I had!” Yamada sighs and rubs the bridge of his nose wearily, deciding to humor Yuto so that he can get back to sleep. Yuto apparently doesn’t hear the reluctance in his voice when he says “go on,” because he quite happily does proceed to go on.
“So we were at this mall, right? And by we I mean JUMP, but the rest of them were playing in the bouncy castles at the food court trying to figure out how Chinen was hovering at the top, so we were off alone at the pet store! And then while I was looking at the flying frogs, Yama-chan decided to get a horse! And the horse talked, and told us that we needed to go save everyone else! So the two of us took the horse, whose name was Takasugi for some reason, he didn’t even have to tell me for me to know! we took Takasugi back to the food court, but it had all turned into a forest! And we got lost and- oh yeah, I think Takasugi was actually a reindeer! Anyway, we went to climb a tree to see everything, but the only thing we could see was a volcano in the distance, and then Yama-chan suddenly said that his back hurt, and you sprouted wings! So you took me flying, but then one of your wings disappeared and we started dropping, and I told you I’d never let go no matter what, and then… I woke up.”
“… that made no sense at all.”
“I know!” And now he can hear the beam that Yuto is giving him, and this time Yamada decides he might have to punch Yuto tomorrow when he sees him.
“What made you think that was important enough to call me at two in the morning?”
And this time even Yuto can hear the agitation in Yamada’s voice, and it makes him chuckle nervously, but he still quite happily says, “I just wanted to let you know I was thinking about you!”
And that’s all it takes to make Yamada laugh suddenly, because that answer is so Yuto he can’t help but grin and admit to the giddy feeling that bubbled in his chest at the explanation. Later he blames it on the lack of sleep, but for now it’s just the happy feeling you get when you realize that someone is thinking about you. “Baka. I don’t need you to tell me that to know that.”
Yuto laughs in agreement, probably quite glad that Yamada wasn’t screaming at him. “I know, but it’s always nice to hear, ne? Maybe now you’ll have a dream about me, too!”
Why is it so hard to stay mad at him? he thinks as he settles back down in his bed, smiling contently and closing his eyes, letting himself fall back into sleep, lulled by the sound of Yuto’s even breathing on the other end. And even if he can’t remember his dream the next morning, he’s certain whatever it has will involve a certain silly-minded best friend of his.
(Yamada’s patience is tested, again, when his mother scolds him for running up the phone bill a week later, but Yuto’s bashful admittance to having gone through the same lecture makes it better.)
btw, out of the 50 quotes given, there are 34 of them that I liked enough to attempt at. That doesn't mean 34 will be done, just for those that are curious.
And as I promised, I'm working on if i never knew you :) When it will be out... who knows.
