The only stars in the night were the billboards with Yamashita and Kusanagi’s face plastered everywhere- look a little more and there might be a NYC Boys advertisement around, perfectly and boyishly handsome faces staring back down at the pedestrians gazing in wonder and excitement. The idea that they would rather look at his face than the even brighter lights in the sky boggled his mind, and not for the first time he wondered why he hadn’t decided to stick to a more simple and laidback life. The fame and popularity was nice for a while, but Yamada would like to step out onto the street without wearing a hat for once, or go out with a girl without having someone jump down his throat about how he shouldn’t be dating her. Especially when he was really dating him.
“Yuto, there’s no stars out tonight,” Yamada pointed out as Yuto dragged him away from the busy streets and to quieter, calmer parts of town. Yuto’s request to go stargazing, of all things, had surprised him, but at the same time it was Yuto. Now, though, he wasn’t seeing the point of this little ‘date’ at all, and was hoping he could talk Yuto into going somewhere that involved ice cream and strawberries.
Yuto wasn’t to be dissuaded, though, and stubbornly pulled Yamada to a bench to sit down, arms linked together without a care for the cameras that could possibly be watching. Yamada sighed. “Yuto, why don’t we come back on a clearer night? It’s too cloudy, you can’t see anything…” Yuto didn’t respond and Yamada continued, “I’ll take you out on a better date sometime-”
“It’s okay, Yama-chan!” Yuto smiled, holding his arm more tightly. “I don’t care if it’s cloudy, it’s still nice out!”
“You’re missing the point,” Yamada mumbled. “We can’t watch stars together when they’re none to watch.”
“Then lets watch the clouds!”
“God you are stubborn.” Staring stubbornly at the bench across from them and ignoring the wounded look on Yuto’s face, Yamada scowled, angry at himself more than anything. Why can’t I be more patient with him. “Sorry.”
“It’s okay.”
Feeling like a total jerk, Yamada sighed to himself and wondered why moments like this had to be so awkward, when did moments like this become so awkward. When had he become so snappish and short with Yuto, unable to enjoy a simple moment that didn’t even mean anything other than the two of them together. He looked at Yuto, tired but cute and trying-his-best Yuto and managed a small smile, his arm tightening around Yuto’s. It’s not really this complicated, is it?
“I’m sorry for dragging you out here and boring you, Yama-chan,” Yuto said softly after a while, trying to rise to his feet. “We can go get parfaits or something-“
“I’m not bored,” Yamada assured quickly, grabbing Yuto’s arm to pull him back down, “It’s fine, really Yuto!”
“You’re just saying that…”
“Am not!” Ignoring how childish that sounded and trying to avoid letting Yuto have time to retort with an ‘are too!’, “I’m fine, watching the stars. It’s nice out here.”
“But there aren’t any stars to watch,” Yuto said, with all the maturity of a sulking six year old. “Just clouds.”
“Yeah, but…” Yamada, who normally refused to be mushy and romantic and would cringe looking back on this moment, smiled and rested his forehead against Yuto’s. “I’m having fun watching my own star.”
The smile on Yuto’s face, shy and happy and aah, so cute!, made the corniness worth it (because in the end, his cute and silly boyfriend was usually always worth it), so Yamada continued and finished with a, “I’d never get bored watching you. You’re the brightest star I know.”
Yuto remained quiet, and it took a few minutes for Yamada to realize that Yuto seemed to be a bit misty-eyed and was definitely sniffling a bit. It made him smile- Yuto’s sensitivity was… endearing. “Baka, you don’t have to talk to me like I’m a girl,” he grumbled, hiding his blush by turning his head and pressing his face into Yamada’s hair, nuzzling him. “I guess cloudy nights aren’t all that bad, huh?”
“Not at all,” Yamada whispered back to him, smiling in a silly way. “We should do it more often.”
Maybe the fangirls aren’t so silly, he thought, watching Yuto watch the clouds, smiling and humming to himself. Not all stars can be found in the sky.
