So, the new Doctor was announced? Awesome. Let the wank begin.
So he's a guy named Matt Smith. He is on Wikipedia
here and IMDB
here. He is 26 years old.
So far, I don't have a problem with him, which I'm pleased about. The wank that's ensuing over his casting, though, is both amusing and expected (lots of links to it
here). Let's face it: no one was going to get what they wanted with this cast change. All we can do now that it's been announced is accept it. Whether people keep watching because of it, that's their own decision.
Personally? I'm going to give him a chance. I'll be honest, I'm absolutely gutted that David Tennant is leaving. Even though I watched the new series from the start, with Christopher Eccleston as Nine, David Tennant has probably always been "my Doctor". I've loved him even through all the highs and lows of the new series. Seeing him go will probably make me bawl my eyes out (which, admittedly, isn't hard to do these days). So yes, I will be very very sad.
But it could be worse, couldn't it? They could be not continuing the series. David Tennant has the right to leave and explore other things. It's good that he's actually stood up and said that, because it's true. We can't have expected him to stay forever. It's not fair to him.
And it's not particularly fair to this Matt Smith guy that he's being judged without even having starred in an episode. I know some people will stop watching because Tennant's leaving; that's fine, it's their choice. But to say Smith's going to be a shit Doctor based off his looks? Come on, people.
It's actually good that they're doing it this way, having Tennant end his run through the four specials with RTD, and then having Matt Smith start his run fresh, with Stephen Moffat. They'll be able to create a completely new character.
I don't mind that he looks "like a schoolboy". I kind of like that angle. Yes, it would've been equally interesting to see an older Doctor, but I like that he's quite young. It could work. One of my favourite things to see explored, story-wise, is when what we perceive doesn't always match up with what is actually true. It could be amusing, that we have this character that by all rights looks like a fairly young man, but then in actual fact, he's a 900+ year old Time Lord. I don't know if something like that would even be explored in the new series, but the idea of it makes me intrigued anyway.
Besides, Stephen Moffat is a strong writer. He created some of the best episodes in the new series (The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink). If anyone can be trusted with a new Doctor, right from the bare bones, it's him.
I won't be expecting the world, but I still have some hope for the fifth series. I'd like to be pleasantly surprised by this new guy. I just hope the outpouring of wank doesn't discourage him. I'll be giving him my support.
