Who'd like more thoughts on District 9?

I went and watched District 9 again today and by today I mean the 18th with iwrotethissong . While that in itself is pretty awesome, what made the night epic was the fact that we missed the session we intended on attending. Apparently we both underestimated the ~power~ of Tightass Tuesday and the movie-going crowd, and the 6.30 session we'd planned on going to ( Read more... )

Okay, I'm failtastic at writing my thoughts up on this movie in my journal, but you've pretty much mirrored everything I wanted to say. LET'S DISCUSS, KAY?
I love analyzing movies.
Unfortunately, I'll probably only see this one in theatres the one time.

Wikus was an asshole in the beginning, sure, but I don't think it was in any sort of genuine asshole way where he actually hated the aliens like a lot of people did. Before he got his promotion, he was a regular old desk jockey, ya? I think a lot of his dickwad-ness came from the fact that he wanted to act like "the cool kids"--the higher ups, the army guys, the people who had been there longer. I think a lot of it was just childish excitement and tag-along. If you notice, he didn't start calling them prawns until after he was promoted, and this first time it came out hesitantly ( ... )

YAY, DISCUSSION TIME! *puts on discussion hat*
At least you did get to see it in the theaters at least once. It wouldn't be the same experience watching it on DVD first.

Oh, I completely agree. The minor interviewee characters display more genuine animosity towards the aliens than Wikus does. I do think that on some level he truly wanted to be able to give both the aliens and the humans a good deal; he just didn't allow himself to realise that the aliens were getting the shit end of the stick. He wanted to believe he was doing them good, even though he probably knew, in some way, that he wasn't. (Which is why I have so much love for the scene where Wikus says to Christopher that the new alien camp will be worse than District 9. He's finally let himself see the whole truth of the situation.)
