So I am wondering if someone should trust their instincts and proven 6th sense over someone's word, knowing that in things regarding this 6th sense they have openly said that they have failed others before me.

If you want my general commentary: Trust your *own* sixth sense. If you sense this person fails others regularly and cannot be trusted, then trust YOUR sense. If you sense this time they might be right, go with what you believe.
But how many times have you told me - you have to find things out for yourself, trust your own needs/instincts.
