What do you think of the whole spoiler issue? (you're probably a bigger HP fan than I am; that's why I'm asking)

I actually wouldn't call the hackers pathetic (even though they likely aren't 'hackers', and even though these spoilers likely are fabricated). Messing with the fans who consider spoilers an absolute mimicry of a novel's climax is simply too tempting an opportunity...

I like to think of Stephen King whenever I think of the possibility of spoilers ruining a novel. At some point in time he made it clear that his novels, which usually have unsatisfactory endings, are not about the conclusion, but about the journey to it. I really couldn't agree more!

Yes, but... it seems like such a waste of time. I'd say it's a bit silly on both sides: the hackers for spending so much energy just to get a superficial ending, and the fans for being so nutty about it to the point that they don't realize that the spoiler is probably not going to ruin the reading experience.

I haven't read much Stephen King, but I think his statement is a pretty good take on spoilers

(you read Harry Potter, right?)

You're right, but I still think, for me, something would be gone if I read spoilers. I'm terrified of that. I always feel some-- just a bit-- of the fun is taken out of the book if I know what's going to happen-- it doesn't have quite the emotional effect intended, I feel, if I knew that was coming. Of course, the content is what's important, but, I don't want to know ANY of it.
