The End of an Era / Happy belated birthday, Harry and J.K. Rowling!

To be honest, I’m a little bit afraid of writing my thoughts about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Don’t get me wrong; I absolutely LOVED the book and I think it’s probably best one in the series. But writing this entry is a bit like… oh I don’t know, writing the perfect college essay or love letter (ok, I’ve never written one, but I imagine ( Read more... )

Phew, you read through it all? Wow, even I can't do it again.

And yes, I'm fine now. Thanks!

This is an amazing post. It makes me feel bad that I can't get into Harry Potter, but I think I'll give it another shot. It amazes me the influences books have on the readers-- and for this book to touch that many people, it's just flabbergasting. Haha, like my mom reads it in Chinese, and she's so attached to the characters, she read spoilers on her Chinese websites because the seventh won't be out for awhile...

Aw, thanks! You should definitely give Harry Potter another shot; you may just well like it. Does your mom only read them in Chinese?

And your icon is amazing, btw. Calculus really is the ultimate tool of destruction!

Haha, yes I love that icon :-D, since I got a paid account, I've been looking for more geeky icons :-).

Yes, my mom only reads them in Chinese-- it's interesting how they translated the names, because they tried to keep them the same but put them in pinyin (tonal system of writing.)

Oo, nice, a paid account! I had wanted one for the longest time, but now I don't care much. If I had one, I'd probably OD on spiffy icons (there are so many funny HP 7 ones out there! And other stuff also. Ahh!). And I just saw your new layout; it's gorgeous!

Do you know if they try to keep the name meanings the same when they translate them? (like Severus's name implies severe, etc.) I would not want to be the person stuck with that job; that would suck.

awesome assessment of HP. i pretty much agree with everything you said. i've been trying, but i can't seem to bring myself to do my own HP post, it's too depressing for me to think about.

Oh man, it took me so long just to muster the guts to do this. It's like saying goodbye :(

I loved the series, but I can't help but think the series' ending was a bit too picturesque.

Rowling has this awful habit of introducing these random artifacts that serve a purpose only for one book before losing their value... The best example of this is probably the Elder Wand (consider how cleanly it ended the novel!)
Eh, just a few complaints. Overall a pleasant experience =D

Mmm, the Elder Wand at the end was a bit deux ex machina (or dumbledore ex machina, as my friend called it). But how else could she have ended it? With the power of love, with Harry giving Voldy a nice big hug and hope that he bursts into flames?

Any other complaints? I wish she had given more screentime to Ginny, Neville, and Luna (and the other classmates also; I liked them!). I mean, I guess it had to feature solely on the tro, but even so...

I still thought it was the best book of the series.
