But after gettting oodles of badgering emails from a friend about how Snape is all warm and fuzzy and loveable, and then seeing lots of "Aww... Snape... I want to cuddle with him" stuff all over the internet, I cracked ( Read more... )

JKR did actually say that perhaps had Snape not been so dark and stuff, not gone with the Death Eaters, that maybe Lily would've loved him back. People fall for their best friends all the time (look at Ron and Hermione, or even Harry and Ginny-- first they're friends, then they're more). I definitely think the story is to prove his motivation-- and it adds such an interesting depth to Snape. I mean, he needs a very powerful motivation to do what he did for Dumbledore and the Order. But people are seeing the arrogant side of James too much. Firstly, he was probably VERY charming, athletic, desirable-- and he got better about the arrogance. And then, he and Lily are just so good, they're real, true Gryffindors. That's one of the biggest reasons they are meant for each other.

But there are too many "if's" in the story. If Snape didn't call Lily that, if he didnt hang out with future Death Eaters, if he wasn't so obsessed about the Dark Arts, etc. And yes, I think the main reason of that backstory was to provide Snape's motivation and to add more depth. But all the fluff is ridiculous; I'm sure Snape would have a nice snide comment about such nonsense.

As for the anti-James stuff (which is also ridiculous, because without him, there'd be no Harry), people grow up. And we've only seen Snape's side of their scuffles; for all we know, it may be like seeing Harry and co. from Malfoy's point of view (even though we know Malfoy deserved all of it).

The thing with Snape is that he's ... a selfish bastard. I mean, I did feel sorry for him and all, but given the choice between James and Snape, James is still the wiser option. Snape wanted Voldy to save only Lily, but not her husband or son, just so he could have her to himself. But yeah, the whole "Lily should have chosen Snape" thing? Ugh, too much fluff.

Poor Snape. He really is a selfish bastard, but still a tragic figure. I wonder if he ever realized that even if he did get her to herself (at the expense of her husband and son), she wouldn't be the same.

And unrequited love/like/whatever does NOT = cute and adorable; it sucks majorly to go through it.

I definitely agree with that statement.

I'm not sure why they'd even think it was cute-- maybe they're confusing sympathy with adorableness?

Oh man, someone should do a mock fic/post/something around the Snape could have been anything idea... like Snape becoming the lead dancer in the Moscow ballet or hosting his own game show or something equally ridiculous... that would be amazing and would deliver the point well
