Yao wasn’t having a very good night. This was just simple fact, as it stood. Being tracked halfway across Asia (sometimes at uncomfortably close range) for the past two months, finally culminating halfway up a frozen mountain with a very messy meal was not the ideal early morning.

Sulking, he made it halfway across the sharp lip of a ravine on one foot, scrabbling at the loose rock face until he rounded a corner and could run properly. Fast.

Running wasn’t going to get him any further with them this close. It might be an easy feat for a werewolf or a dragon, but as a jiang shi he was more than a little impaired as soon as the Hunters behind him rounded the corner and set eyes on him once more. And them having horses made it more than unfair, as did the rising sun.

Cursing, Yao kept his yellow eyes opened until he spotted a suitable ledge and crawled inside. Once flat on his belly, he stopped breathing and closed his eyes. Any movement, any sound.... His foot slipped, revealing a hollow he hadn’t noticed before. Startled, he turned to the source of the noise, cursed as the sound of clattering hooves grew louder, and shimmied backwards into the opening.

----

Being winded without the need to actually breathe was an odd sensation.

The jiang shi dazedly realised that he had fallen down a small tunnel, a crack in the rock, and cringed more at the clumsiness than any actually fright. That couldn’t have been at all graceful... but never mind.

He hopped to his feet and squinted into the darkness before it because adjusted, fairly quickly. The space he found himself in was fairly large, but Yao’s mouth turned down into a scowl. It was large enough not to be oppressive, but small enough to be uncomfortable. However, he was going to have to deal with it for at least a few days.

Moving a little forward, water splashed into his shoes before stretching out a long way across to the opposite cave wall. Lethal looking spines hung from the ceiling, and the entire place was pitch black-

And someone else was in here, if the stiffness creeping into his limbs was any indication. One of the stalagmites blinked at him when he rested one foot behind the opposite knee for balance.

“Namaste?” It said sleepily, stretching a little.

Before Yao could open his mouth to reply, a second stalagmite fell from the ceiling just above him and landed with a thump a few metres away. It grumbled and rolled over.

In the blink of an eye, the still attached shape was gone and there was a woman standing in front of him, shaking her hair over one shoulder. Dark, with patterned hands, even Yao had to admit she was beautiful - without the glamour of a vampire thrown on top, that always made them look too perfect, and was a way to spot them.

The jiang shi raised an eyebrow.

“Is he okay?” He flicked his eyes to the other vampire, which was now happily snoring on the ground.

She laughed.

“Oh don’t worry, he always rolls out of bed!”
