I've been reading enough about "Kitten Care" to put the fear into me. We will refill the bathroom litterbox with non-clumping litter tonight. S and Z have tested negative for FeLeuk and FIV, but I am still worried that they may have had False Negatives. And what about worms! Feh. I've had cats on and off for years and never had a tree. Cats like couches, on, over, under. Cats like to sit on whatever you are reading. Odds are good if you had a tree they would ignore it and come climb onto your lap.

Paul and Suzanne also have two new-ish kittens and no tree, and they seem very happy and playful, and find lots of places to climb they should not be, like the kitchen table. The only cat furniture they installed was a shelf by the window because the sill wasn't that big, but it you have a sit-able sill that is probably ideal.

Ignore the authoritative articles, I guess. We had many happy, healthy cats over the years, and I don't remember there ever being a scratching post in the house. I think somebody's just trying to sell you scratching posts.

Whenever we tried to introduce scratching posts to our cats,
they had to be trained to use them (The funniest part was
the naughty, furniture-chewing kitten refusing to use it,
and the huge, well-behaved older cat turning juvenile &
tearing the living hell out of the one my brother made...).

Judge by experience. Brutus is happy, Shadow was; never did we have cat-trees or the like.

Yes, you need to stay away from helpful websites for a while.

And you think I am fretting too much about them? ;-)
