Okay, question... in the beginning of this episode, there was an earthquake type of situation. Was this caused by the plane entering their little island's atmosphere? If so, then really... where are they?

You really put some thought into your questions and noticed things I hadn't even seen, like the lock on Sawyer's cell. Maybe I should look more closely next time! Hmmm... it will definitely be interesting to see what they come up with next!

I think the earthquake was caused by the two guys in the hatch, (Desmond and some other dude) who were out wrestling over a boat and so, not pushing the button. The giant magnetic field was released and pulled the plane down.

As for where they are... no idea... I think that's part of the mystery. It's not a real island... it's a LIVE island! Or something like that. There are theories.
