Sophie had opened the letter.

P.S.,

We regret to inform you that a man of your suspected acquaintance, Silas (formerly of the Opus Dei), was found murdered recently. We thought it best to wait for a few days until you were settled in to break the news.

Sincerest sympathies. She'd spent a good while staring at the letter and running possiblities ( Read more... )

Greg had felt the four walls of the room closing in on him, and he needed some fresh air. He decided to use the elevator and avoid the stairs in the lobby all together. The door nearest the elevator took him out toward the lake, and even though he saw and recognised Sophie out by the water, he made his way across the somehat rocky terrain anyway.

"Sit there long enough the birds might mistake you for a carcass."

"Do shut up." She snapped, folding the letter into her pocket and then tugging her knees a little closer.

She wasn't in the mood to be verbally abused at the moment.

Well, it certainly wasn't like Sophie to snap at him so readily. She usually tried to be pleasant, even when he was snapping at her. Or cordial, at least, if not pleasant.

"Bad news?" he nodded almost curiously at the letter as she tucked it away in her pocket. Maybe it was a "Dear Jane" break up letter from James.

"I don't suppose it's any of your business. I know that it isn't, in fact."

She glanced back out at the lake.

While Greg had left the room, James had stayed, lying on the bed and reading a book to try and distract himself. It wasn't really working; he couldn't concentrate, no matter how much he tried.

He gave up after a while, slapping the book shut and tossing it on the nightstand before he decided to go for a walk somewhere. Anywhere.

Which was how he ended up down by the lake, where he spotted Sophie. He had no idea Greg had been there. Not yet, anyway.

"Hey," he hesitantly greeted, moving to stand beside her with his hands deep in his trouser pockets.

She leant her cheek against his calf, biting her lip a little. She passed the letter up to him.

Not because she felt that it was impersonal, but because she didn't really want to voice certain things. And it would explain her moods...

He looked curious as he took the letter, peering down at Sophie for a moment before turning his attention to the letter.

He opened it, read it silently, and then slowly closed it again, tucking it back into the envelope.

Without a word, he crouched down to the ground and sat, and slid his arm around her shoulder.

"I'm sorry," he said, quietly.

Sophie snuggled into the grip and nodded, sniffing a little before she rested her cheek against his chest.

"Me too." She slipped her hand into his and squeezed firmly. "Gregoire was here earlier."
