summary: SHINee gets kissy. Taemin is displeased.
a/n: haha, not much to say about this... it's rather hastily written, and I'd kind of forgotten about it... I wonder how it reads...
Jonghyun was the one who started it.
He was the one who, during a lively performance of Up and Down, pranced over to Minho and, for the first time, planted a real, mouth-to-mouth kiss on his lips.
Minho turned, eyes comically wide, to the crowd as Jonghyun skipped, a smile on his sweaty face, off to the other side of the stage. There were whoops and cheers, and the next day there were headlines: "SHINee's Jonghyun: new kissing fiend?" "Is SHINee's Jonghyun deserting Shin Sekyung?" "Jonghyun takes SHINee's skinship to the next level!"
"Did you two plan that?" Taemin asked after the show. "Or was it a surprise?"
"Of course we planned it," Jonghyun snorted. "Would this kid let me kiss him without warning?"
"I barely even let you with warning," Minho said, laughing. "Never again."
At their next fanmeeting there was another kiss - this one between Jonghyun and Kibum during Hello. And then, to top it off, Jonghyun kissed Minho once more at the end of the song.
"What's wrong with you guys?" Taemin wailed backstage. "What's happening?"
They laughed at him, laughed off the headlines, and began to plan the next kiss.
...
Jonghyun kissed Jinki, Jinki kissed Kibum, Minho kissed Kibum, Jonghyun kissed Kibum, they all kissed each other - except for Taemin, who wanted no part in any of it. The headlines, which had begun with the likes of "SHINee's newfound skinship" and "The kissing bug has hit all of SHINee now," shifted their focus; they now heralded, "SHINee's Taemin afraid of skinship?" and "SHINee's maknae too pure for public kisses."
"I'm not afraid of skinship," Taemin pouted, reading the article over Jinki's shoulder.
"Then let me kiss you," Jinki challenged.
"No way!" Taemin cried, taking a step back.
"You're afraid," Jinki said decisively. "It's okay, Taemin-ah. We won't kiss you. Besides, tomorrow night's our last concert for a while. Then it'll be over, and you won't have to worry anymore."
...
Taemin wasn't afraid of skinship, per se, but he was in no way comfortable with one of his bandmates taking his first kiss. He had to assume that those onstage kisses had been no one's first, so it was all well and good for them to have their fun, but how could they understand how he felt? They couldn't. Taemin told himself he wasn't afraid so much as protective.
He decided to confide in Jinki about this.
"Hyung," he called, bursting into the bedroom where Jinki had just gone to change, "hyung - oh."
All four of them were gathered there, Jinki and Jonghyun on the center bed and Minho and Kibum on Minho's. It seemed that they were having a conference of some sort, and all of their heads turned to face Taemin as he entered.
"Taemin-ah," Kibum said, "did you want something?"
"Um," Taemin hedged, backing out slowly, "I just wanted to . . . I was going to ask Minho if he wanted to play Starcraft, but it looks like you guys are busy, so I'll just go now. Alright."
As Taemin left, shutting the door behind him, he missed the look of delight that spread across each of the other members' faces.
"This is going to be fun!" Jonghyun squealed, clapping his hands.
...
The concert began well. Taemin was heartened by the utter lack of kissing, and by the time Lucifer rolled around, he was riding on a performing high he hadn't felt in months. Everything was going smoothly; this was the home stretch, and they all seemed to be spurred on and energized by the thought. There were no cracked voices, no missed notes, no wrong steps, no slips of any kind - everything was going perfectly, Minho was going to finish his rap, they would sing the final chorus and then they would finally be done -
But something was wrong. Because as soon as Minho finished his rap, he was supposed to return to the back of the formation, and instead he was tugging Taemin by the hand up to the very front of the stage. The others were just carrying on behind them, and before Taemin could say anything Minho's lips were pressing, hot and insistent, against his, and just like that his first kiss was snatched away.
It lasted much longer than it should have, and in the midst of the rushing in his ears and the deafening screams of the audience and the beat of the song, Taemin realized that he wasn't breathing. Coughing, he pulled away, hid his face; when he looked back up, Minho was licking his lips and grinning triumphantly at the crowd. Taemin groaned and curled up into a ball on the stage, just as Minho was shouting out the final lyrics of the song.
Then Jinki, Jonghyun, Kibum were gathered around him, trying to coax him into standing up, but Taemin wouldn't have it.
"You traitors!" he yelled, lying down in a fetal position.
"Taemin-ah," Minho said into his mic, and though Taemin couldn't see him he could picture the look on that giggling idiot's face, "Taemin-ah, get up - "
"Traitor!" Taemin moaned again.
Only when Jinki persuaded the crowd to chant Taemin's name over and over again did the maknae finally rise. He went straight to Kibum and buried his face in the older boy's shoulder.
"Aigoo," Kibum murmured, "don't be so upset, Taemin-ah, it's only a kiss - "
"My first kiss!" Taemin whispered fiercely. "That was my first kiss!"
"Taeminnie - "
"Remind me to kill him later," Taemin said through his teeth as he turned to face the crowd. "I'm going to fucking murder him."
...
Taemin waited until they got back to the dorm before he confronted Minho. When they had all showered and Jinki had plopped, completely plastered, into bed, and Kibum was yelling at Jonghyun for spilling soju on his handphone, Taemin pulled Minho forcefully into the bathroom and locked the door.
"You're not drunk," Minho commented, "what a nice surprise - "
"You're a dirty, dirty bastard," Taemin hissed. "You suck and I hate you!"
"Hm?" Minho frowned. "Taemin-ah, is this about earlier, during Lucifer? Because that - "
"You have no excuse!" Taemin exclaimed. He poked Minho hard in the chest. "You knew, everyone knew. You knew that was my first kiss, and you did it anyway!"
"Taemin-ah, it wasn't a real kiss, okay?" Minho said patiently. "For your first real kiss, I'm sure it will be special. But that was just - it was fanservice, it was a joke. You know why we do these things, it's just an act."
"But why me?" Taemin whined. "You were perfectly happy kissing the hyungs before, why did you suddenly have to kiss me?"
"Taemin-ah," Minho said sternly. "If you really wanted to avoid things like this, you shouldn't have gone into the entertainment business at all."
"But - "
"Or," Minho continued, "you should have gotten your first kiss out of the way early."
"Gotten it out of the way?" Taemin said, scandalized. "Yah, a first kiss needs to be special! How can you just get it out of the way, like it's something bothersome - "
"It is bothersome," Minho said impatiently, "it's bothersome how you keep using your virgin lips or whatever as an excuse to shirk your fanservice duties. So how about this. Let's erase that last kiss onstage, okay? It never happened."
"I wish," Taemin muttered.
"And now, let's get your real first kiss out of the way."
"What? You're not - "
And then Minho's lips were descending on his again, tasting faintly of alcohol and seeming to suck the breath out of Taemin. With all his strength, the younger boy tried to push Minho away, only to be pulled close into a tight embrace. Trapped, with his arms pinned against Minho's chest, Taemin realized that struggling was going to get him nowhere; closing his eyes, he let his body go limp.
And suddenly, with his eyes closed, this seemed much more agreeable. Minho's lips were unexpectedly soft, and the hand running slowly through Taemin's hair was unexpectedly gentle. With his eyes closed, Taemin felt he could be in almost anyone's arms and for a moment he lost himself and began to kiss those skilled lips back - until he remembered that this was Minho, for God's sake, and he pulled back in horror.
"What the hell?" he whispered. As Minho opened his mouth to reply, there was a loud banging on the bathroom door.
"Taemin-ah! Are you in there? Come on, I have to wash my face," Kibum called. "What are you doing in there? Don't tell me you're constipated. Did you eat enough fiber today?"
Taemin said nothing. He just continued to stare into Minho's dark eyes until the older boy finally turned and left, shocking Kibum into silence as he emerged from the bathroom.
"Yah," Kibum said in a hushed voice when Minho had gone, "Taemin-ah, what was that? You didn't hit him, did you? What just - "
"I have no idea," Taemin said honestly, brushing past Kibum. "I really don't know."
...
Later that night, when Taemin was trying to get to sleep, he heard Minho and Kibum speaking in low voices on the other side of the room.
". . . seriously, what was that?" Kibum was saying.
"I don't know," Minho snapped. "He was just being annoying, so I kissed him to shut him up and - " he sighed loudly " - I don't know. It was kind of . . . yeah."
"Oh my God," Kibum gasped, "you like him!"
"No!" Minho said. "No! I just - it was just a kiss! I just feel a little bad because . . . he was all attached to the idea of his first kiss, and . . . I don't know. Ah, whatever. When he gets a girlfriend, he'll forget about this."
"But will you?" Kibum said after a pause.
"Of course," Minho said quickly. "I don't - it was just a kiss."
"Whatever you say," Kibum whispered, his tone making it clear that he didn't believe the other boy's words. Taemin could hear him starting to climb up to his own bed. "You should apologize to Taemin, by the way."
"Yeah," Minho sighed. "I will."
"Preferably before he castrates you in your sleep. Because he was pretty damn mad when I talked to him."
"I know," Minho groaned, "I know."
...
Taemin didn't give Minho a chance to apologize. He cornered him in the bathroom again the next morning, well before Kibum was up to begin his beauty routine.
"Minho-yah," he said quietly. "I thought about what you said last night, and I realized something."
"You . . . um, okay," Minho said, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
"Kisses between boys don't count," Taemin continued. "So I can still have my first real kiss."
Minho just watched the maknae warily and waited.
"And," Taemin went on, "I still really want it to be special. So, Minho-yah, will you teach me how to kiss like you?"
"Eh?" Minho, completely taken aback, blinked hard. "What?"
"You heard me," Taemin said evenly. "Teach me, Minho-yah. If you kiss me right now . . . then it never happened. Right?"
Minho didn't really know what Taemin was up to, but he decided now that it didn't matter. Swiftly, he cupped Taemin's chin and pulled him close.
"You're right," he murmured. "This never happened."
...
"We shouldn't have done it," Jinki said worriedly as he entered the kitchen. He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "I think Taemin's really upset."
"We shouldn't have let Minho do it," Jonghyun corrected, trailing tiredly after the leader. "If it had been me or Kibum, it would have been fine . . ."
"Don't be stupid," Kibum scoffed from the counter, "no matter who it was, there was going to be a problem." He began to scoop rice out into bowls for their breakfast. "And besides, if anyone were to get away with comfortably kissing Taemin, it would be Jinki hyung."
"Yah," Jonghyun said, offended. "What about me? Are you saying I'm a bad kisser?"
"It doesn't matter," Jinki said hastily, cutting off their argument before it could begin. "The point is, I think we should all tell Taemin we're sorry. I mean, Minho wasn't even the one who had the idea . . ."
"Yeah, that was me," Jonghyun said proudly. "It was pretty funny, though, huh?"
"But then we'd have to tell him why Minho was the one who kissed him," Kibum said, frowning as he pulled leftover kimchi from the refrigerator. "And won't that make him feel a little awkward?"
"Why would it?" Jonghyun said. "We agreed that the first person he mentioned or talked to when he came into the bedroom that day would be the one to kiss him. And he mentioned Minho. So Minho kissed him. Isn't that pretty straightforward?"
"I don't know," Kibum sighed. "Let's just tell him the four of us picked Minho because he's the closest to Taemin's age."
"What about my age?" Taemin asked brightly, skipping into the kitchen.
"Oh, nothing," Kibum said. "Just, um - "
"Taemin-ah, we just wanted to apologize," Jinki said, his brow furrowed with concern. "For making Minho kiss you last night."
"Speak for yourself," Jonghyun grumbled. "I still think it was funny." Kibum slapped him on the back of the head. "I mean, sorry, I'm sorry."
"Really, Taemin-ah," Kibum said, but Taemin cut him off.
"No worries, guys," the maknae said cheerfully. "I forgive you."
"Eh?" Jinki's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "That quickly?"
"Sure," Taemin said. "And Minho, too."
At that, Minho came lumbering out from the living room. He fidgeted uncomfortably at the three pairs of eyes that were staring at him, and he glanced down at himself.
"Um," he said, "is there something on my shirt, or - ?"
"Did something happen?" Kibum asked suspiciously, his gaze bouncing back and forth between Minho and Taemin.
"Nope," Minho said breezily, scratching his head.
"Nothing happened," Taemin said, smiling widely. He and Minho shared a glance.
"Nothing at all."
