I finally decided to brave the sourdough starter and *use* it today. it was like staring at my 6th grade science project (bread mold) but with less technicolor yawn. The boy and I are not super fond of miso soup (what can I say?) but someday I may experiment with it. The Joy of Cooking seems to have a quick version of the broth that I might try. It is just not high on my list right now.
